Marine Nuclear Engineer, Technology

ABS is a leading Classification Society driven by its mission of promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment. In fulfilling this mission, ABS leads research and develops guidance and requirements focused on the safety of implementing new technology in the marine and offshore environment. 

As a Marine Nuclear Engineer, you will be actively engaged in driving industry-leading technology activities associated with implementing advanced reactor technology into the marine and offshore industries. The position will play a leading role in the investigation and application of nuclear energy in the marine environment.

What You Will Do:

Align with the ABS mission of promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment. Lead and present research on the practical application of commercial nuclear technology in the merchant marine and offshore environment.  Lead or participate in technical project teams. Deliver high-quality projects on schedule and within budget, working either independently or within the team environment. Maintain good relations with customers and coworkers. Mentor less experienced engineers. Manage multiple project activities simultaneously.  Ensure that all ABS Quality System requirements concerning technical work within assigned areas of responsibility are fulfilled. Maintain and demonstrate thought leadership through the creation of technical publications, conference presentations and panel discussions. Actively promote the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the technical and business community. Interface with industry stakeholders, including nuclear technology providers, ship owners, ship operators, regulators, governments and academic institutions.  Stay actively informed about maritime-nuclear developments, including technical, business, and management activities affecting ABS and its customers and promptly communicate this information to management. Identify and evaluate emerging nuclear technologies with the potential for use in maritime applications.  Develop guidance and classification requirements for the marine and offshore industry on the application of new technology.  Support ABS technical community on queries regarding nuclear energy and reactor systems. Participate in industrial committees to development and enhance technical capabilities. 

 

What You Will Need:

Education & Experience

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in related discipline; M.S. or Ph. D. is preferred. Additional educational qualifications and/or combined expertise in nuclear technology. Exposure to the marine and/or offshore industry preferred.  Minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in an industry, research or academic environment.  United States Citizenship required. Former naval nuclear experience is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of current and emerging nuclear technologies and related engineering subjects. Ability to apply and communicate knowledge of nuclear technologies in the development of guidance and requirements for the marine and offshore industries. Awareness of marine and/or offshore knowledge. Problem solving and critical thinking; the ability to proactively develop and implement logical solutions to complex problems. Strong communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent command of the English language. Strong presentation skills. Project management and effective time management, including organizational skills. Influencing without authority and building positive relationships with coworkers and clients.  Demonstrated ability to work well with others. Engagement with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental (HSQE) Management System

 

Reporting Relationships:

Reports, as assigned, to a Managing Principal Engineer or above. No direct reports.

Working Conditions

Work will generally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Work will be non-manual, but the incumbent must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures. Occasionally may have to lift between 5‒15 pounds.
