Job Description The Department of City Planning (DCP) is excited to provide a summer experience that provides local undergraduates with the skills and tools to engage in public outreach to achieve neighborhood and city-wide planning goals. The program is open to students interested in public service, who are seeking insights into the skills and tools needed to support community advocacy and curious about entering career fields related to city planning, such as information technology, environmental sciences, law, public policy and many more. Participation in the program will provide experience that may lead to graduate schools or entry-level positions with NYC Department of City Planning or other agencies. In addition to on-the-job training, the program will offer an Agency orientation, a Public Engagement Boot Camp and opportunities to put these skills into action to support the Agency’s summer outreach initiatives. Additionally, the Agency will host Intern Networking activities and site visits to see how the NYC Department of City Planning is working with communities in all five boroughs. There are several job postings with descriptions of each Division’s summer outreach efforts. Interns should apply to all Divisions they are interested in working. All interns will participate in the joint activities hosted by the Agency, but will report to and work in the Division office that selects them to participate in their summer initiatives. About DCP The Department of City Planning (DCP), through extensive community engagement, plans for the strategic growth and development of the City, develops citywide and neighborhood land use policies and zoning regulations, and shares its perspectives on growth and community needs with NYC city agencies in collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). About the Manhattan Borough Office Manhattan is home to over 1.6 million residents and serves as the economic engine of the regional economy with well over 2 million workers commuting to and within the borough daily. The landscape of Manhattan is highly varied and ranges from very high-density office and residential districts to low-scale rowhouses, stretching the full 13.4 miles of the island. The borough includes the sources of some of the most iconic images of the global imagination – Times Square, Wall Street, Central Park, Harlem, the United Nations – as well as countless hidden gems around every corner. The Manhattan Borough Office, located in the Department of City Planning’s headquarters building in the heart of Manhattan’s Financial District, is responsible for developing borough-wide and local area plans, reviewing and processing Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) process and non-ULURP applications, and providing technical and policy guidance and direction on all land use and zoning related matters to the City Planning Commission (CPC), local Community Boards, elected officials and the public at large. The Manhattan Office emphasizes planning and urban design that create a more equitable city, with rich opportunities for and access to housing, employment, recreation, and transit. The approximately 20-person Office is comprised of professional planners working in teams arranged by community district as well as urban designers that work borough-wide across a wide range of projects. The Manhattan Borough Office is seeking a Summer Intern to work with the agency’s citywide Privately-Owned Public Space (POPS) team. To date, there are nearly 600 POPS in the city and can range from large outdoor public plazas, indoor atriums, and arcades. The role will include, but not limited to, public space research, document collection assembly, internal database maintenance, and response to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests. In addition to POPS tasks, the role will include assisting with citywide initiatives such as the future POPS Text Amendment and gaining exposure to meetings with external applicants. Candidates should have a strong interest in public open space and urban design as well as the ability and desire to dig into technical architectural drawings and conduct site visits as needed.
