We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager & Counsel - Data Privacy within the General Counsel’s Organisation (GCO) at American Express. The Manager and Counsel will report to the Vice President and Senior Counsel, EMEA Data Protection and will be a member of the Global Privacy and Data Law Group.

The Manager & Counsel will work across all business units, including Consumer, Merchant, Marketing, Digital and the Colleague Experience Group. You will support the Vice President and Senior Counsel in providing expert advice and support to the business on all aspects of data protection, privacy, and best practice, working closely with compliance and privacy operational teams.

How will you make an impact in this role?

Advising all business units with day-to-day data protection and privacy queries across the region. Provide privacy support to new product launches and initiatives in the region, such as advising on the data privacy issues and providing practical solutions to mitigate privacy risks. Drafting and negotiating commercial agreements relating to data protection and privacy, including data processing agreements and international transfer agreements. Overseeing the development and maintenance of data privacy related policies and guidance, including reviewing and drafting privacy notices and disclosures. Keeping data protection and privacy templates and guidance documents/playbooks up to date. Keeping up to date with proposed and actual changes to laws, regulations, and regulator guidance; assessing their impact and advising relevant teams to ensure compliance with applicable laws and mitigate risk. Supporting data privacy training and awareness across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified to practice law in the UK or other European jurisdictions. Proven years of relevant data protection and privacy experience at a law firm and/or in-house.  Excellent knowledge of UK and EU data protection and privacy laws and regulatory guidance, including the EU GDPR, the e-Privacy Directive and EDPB guidance. Strong technical legal skills (drafting, analysis, and negotiation) and the ability to provide clear, precise, and pragmatic advice. A team player with great stakeholder management skills who can effectively collaborate and build relationships with lawyers and business clients throughout the organization. Ability to work with a degree of autotomy and re-prioritise workload as new projects and matters arise. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Strong commercial acumen and solutions focus. Willingness and flexibility to take on new responsibilities as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior tech, fintech and/or financial services experience is advantageous. Experience with handling data protection and privacy issues for multinational companies. Familiarity with business and products across the banking/financial services industry and relevant legal issues affecting them. CIPP/EU certification.
