Manager, Research Accounting Services

Job Summary

The Manager is responsible for analyzing financial information and performing a variety of accounting duties associated with the timely and accurate preparation and reporting of sponsored project data, in accordance with applicable accounting, industry, regulatory and institutional principles and policies.  The Manager will report to the Research Accounting Services’ Assistant Director and will have direct supervision of 4-5 staff members.  The Manager is responsible for training team members and insuring timely submission of invoices, financial reports and closeouts.

Essential Functions

Maintain current knowledge of sponsor regulations and policies. Review and approve no cost extension requests, including obtaining approval from sponsors as necessary. Communicate with internal and external contacts to ensure accuracy of research accounting support for fund administration; communicate with sponsors and sub-contractors regarding contract and/or budget modifications; operate as functional liaison in support of individual faculty, principal investigators, departmental administrators, and others integral to the effective management of externally sponsored awards. Supervise 4-5 research accountants; provide direction and training to staff on proper sponsored project accounting and policies and procedures. Management of portfolio of sponsored awards including: monitoring and reconciling facilities and administrative rate charges on sponsored project funds, monitoring of budget variances and making determinations if sponsor approval is required based on terms and conditions of the award, maintenance of the financial records associated with the award; Reconcile sponsored project fund accounts as assigned; Enter transactions into the Banner ERP accurately and timely; Identify accounting corrections; Analyze and audit transactions and fund account statements for accuracy. Assist in preparing year-end and interim reports; run daily error reports and identify discrepancies and take appropriate action to rectify them; Responsible for accurate and timely financial and statistical reporting. Develop and present training sessions for the university community; performs research and analysis on special projects as assigned. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. Please review the  Equivalency Chart for additional information. Experience using Banner ERP, PCs, Office 365, and reporting tools (Hyperion/OBIEE).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with research accounting/post-award grants management at a research-intensive university. Supervisory experience. Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance and State and Local regulatory guidance related to grants management. Ability to effectively communicate financial information. Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade L. Compensation for this grade ranges from $ 62,630.00 to $ 93,950.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
