Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is seeking to hire an experienced leader in bioinformatics based in San Diego or Foster City, CA. ILS is at the forefront of all research and clinical sequencing and genotyping applications that leverage Illumina technologies. Therefore, members of the ILS bioinformatics team are responsible for the analysis of cancer, reproductive and genetic health, and genotypic data. The expectation of the Manager, Bioinformatics is to engage with internal and external collaborators, to improve current on-market solutions by driving data insights from data, and to translate the challenges faced by the group into bioinformatics solutions. 

Responsibilities:

Lead a team of bioinformatic scientists that use statistical analysis, machine learning and bioinformatics algorithms (variant calling and QC methods) to support projects related to clinical applications of Illumina technologies.

Mentor scientists involved with research and development of clinically focused solutions and new biomarker discovery through analysis of large-scale datasets.

Regularly communicate and establish project timelines, deliverables that include analysis results and other findings to a cross-functional team.

Design, guide and prototype robust pipelines and ad-hoc scripts to analyse genomic data.

Manage the development of novel and optimize bioinformatic tools and algorithms to improve product performance and patient outcomes.

Work collaboratively with other functional leads, bioinformaticians, research scientists and engineers for various projects.

Produce PDP and technical documentation of data analyses (e.g. R Markdowns/Jupyter Notebooks), custom software tools or software development activities.

Requirements:

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, with 1-3 years of Management experience.

Experienced technical leader in statistical and mathematical modelling with NGS data; machine learning techniques, Bayesian statistics and multivariate analysis are a plus.

Directly worked with current bioinformatics and genomic resources and tools for tertiary analysis of genetic and genomic data in fields of oncology and genetic diseases.

Experienced programming and scripting; past experiences that demonstrates ability to write readable, well-documented and unit-tested code.

Knowledge of AWS Services, S3, EC2, IAM, SNS, SQS.

Experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub).

Must have proficient written, communication and presentation skills with the ability to present to both scientific and corporate audiences.

Strong data analysis skills using R, Python, or other modern data analysis languages.

Must be independent and strategically minded.

The estimated base salary range for the Manager, Bioinformatics role based in the United States of America is: $152,600 - $228,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
