The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained. Hiring Salary Range: $40,688 - $46,791.20 Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to: + Performs general labor in the construction and repair of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, roadways, utility cuts and emergency recovery such as snow removal and storm debris removal. + Performs digging, picking, shoveling, leveling materials, and using hand tools in performing general construction and maintenance repairs on City streets and bridges. + Operates various hand and power tools. + Drives Non-CDL City vehicles, including dump trucks and light construction equipment. + Requires normal hearing, peripheral vision, and depth perception to safely work on streets with high traffic volume. + Must be able to operate both standard and automatic transmission vehicles and light construction equipment. + Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions given by a supervisor. + Must be able to stand, bend, stoop and climb onto construction equipment. + Must be able to load and unload equipment, clean work sites, and lift a maximum of 100 pounds. + Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures. + Must be able to work long shifts during emergency weather conditions. Education/Experience Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency. No experience required. Additional Information & Requirements Must possess Virginia's Driver’s License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
