Linux System Administrator, Senior Specialist

Become a Linux System Administrator, Senior Specialist at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be responsible for supporting SCE’s NERC regulated infrastructure including supporting components, and applications for Power System Controls (PSC) environment to ensure availability, reliability, and security, with a focus on Linux Administration. The infrastructure includes HP and Dell server hardware, virtualization technologies, server and workstation OSes, such as Red Hat Linux (RHEL8x/9x), Openshift (RHEL), Windows 2016/ 2019/ 2022 Win10/11), supporting components/applications, and a variety of applications. You will perform a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) hardware and software evaluation, infrastructure monitoring and maintenance (i.e., OS/Firmware/ Software installs/upgrades/patches), incident management, change management, problem management, and compliance.

 

Key Focus of Role

NERC / CIP Compliance:  Monitor, support, and maintain a large, complex, and NERC regulated compute infrastructure per predefined standards and guidelines, industry best practice, including install, configure, and update/patch OS and other patches.  Ensuring maintenance and support activities are in compliance with NERC CIP. Incident Management: Perform incident management per defined SLA, access management, problem management, and vulnerability management. Analysis: Perform in-depth analysis to provide recommendations to other groups using knowledge of infrastructure configuration and capability and application flows. Vendor Management: Work with and Oversee Service Providers to ensure operational tasks are performed according to defined process, procedures and SLA. Operations Management: Review, create and modify operational processes and procedures documentation. Design, implement, and maintain Linux-based systems, including physical and virtual servers. Handle and troubleshoot virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, and Nutanix. Maintain and support RHEL Satellite and RHEL Directory Services. Deploy, manage, and scale OpenShift Kubernetes clusters in multiple environments. Develop and maintain automation scripts using tools like Ansible and Terraform. Understand CICD Pipeline using GIT, Jenkins, and Nexus Repository. Refresh/ update/ upgrade infrastructure systems and applications to ensure they are up-to-date.  Audit & Compliance: Participate in change management, compliance, and audit activities. Team Lead: Deliver training and provide direction to junior staff. Collaboration: Coordinating activities involving clients, IT teams, and vendors in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of our systems. Collaborate and Support Project and Intake teams to ensure smooth integration of systems and applications. Technical Expert: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in Linux, virtualization, and containerization.

Responsibilities Analyzes existing security systems and makes recommendations for changes or improvements Prepares reports and action plans in the event of a security breech Ensures regular penetration testing is completed and any findings are remediated in a timely manner Assists security team by completing tasks of low to medium complexity for projects of various size and scope as assigned by information security leadership Creates, revises, and maintains high quality written process documents, methods of procedure, knowledge base articles, flowcharts Monitors day-to-day security logs and traffic and analyzes for network attacks or intrusions Participates in rollouts of threat and vulnerability management solutions across various business entities; assists program leader with documentation, testing, and validation of deployed scanning solution Identifies and manages risk to ensure that risks are mitigated, and problems resolved, in relation to meeting relevant commitments Reviews policies and procedures for compliance with applicable standards and to identify areas of improvement for finding remediation Maintains cybersecurity procedures and processes as assigned A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity. Minimum Qualifications Five or more years of experience in information technology, information security and/or cybersecurity.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Five or more years of experience in IT, supporting Linux infrastructure (Red Hat/SUSE). One or more years of experience in DevOps, Kubernetes/ Ansible/ Openshift/ Git/ Terraform. Experience working in Data Center or large complex IT Enterprise environments. Experience working with emerging technology, including AI. Willingness and ability to travel throughout SCE’s service territory to perform maintenance tasks as needed. Willingness and ability for on-call duties including scheduled and unscheduled evening and weekend work. Experience and ability providing after-hours incident and maintenance support, including scheduled and unscheduled evening and weekend work. Three or more years of experience with support Windows infrastructure or virtualization. Experience with NERC/CIP. Bachelor’s DegrBachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or similar technical major/ discipline.ee or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or similar technical major/ discipline. Possess one or more of the following certifications: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), Microsoft Systems Engineer (MCSE/ MCSA), VMWare, Citrix, and/or ITIL Foundation certifications.

 

Additional Information 

This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at Data Centers and Service Centers across the SCE service territory. Position will require up to 10% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.  This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position – Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties. Relocation does not apply to this position.
