Position Purpose:
Provides professional management over a broad range of intellectual property (IP) management and commercialization activities within the Division of Research to fulfill WSU's stewardship responsibilities for the deployment of government-sponsored technology for public benefit, create new business opportunities and to generate returns for WSU.
Essential Functions:
Identification and commercialization of engineering/physical sciences technologies developed at WSU. Lead the commercialization lifecycle, including mining of innovative technologies, identification and protection of intellectual property, development of commercialization roadmaps and marketing and licensing of intellectual property.
Responsible for the evaluation, positioning, development , and commercialization of intellectual property including the assessment of the commercial/business viability and revenue potential. Conduct market assessments and screenings to evaluate potential markets and valuation of IP opportunities.
Lead the development and implementation of strategy for IP commercialization, making further investments which add commercial value to that IP, and deployment of the IP into licenses. Support and enhance the commercialization endeavor within Wayne State University (WSU).
Pursue relationships and partnerships with large established companies as well as startups and new ventures. Maintain a close, ongoing, and productive interaction with the faculty and staff. Maintain continual and highly interactive relationships with other Commercialization Principals, legal and contracts staff, business management staff, and other WSU senior staff and executives across all sectors, especially those working in related technology areas.
Negotiate and prepare license agreements and other documents related to intellectual property.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Bachelor's degree in engineering or physical science field from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Intermediate: (3 to 4 years job-related experience).
Minimum 3-5 years' experience including successful drafting and negotiation of agreements (e .g., technology licensing, non-disclosure, material transfer and sponsored research agreements) and working with venture capital community and start-up companies.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with researchers, business development leaders, legal staff, and industrial contacts.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Interpersonal Skills:The ability to interact effectively in the academic and corporate setting.
Business Knowledge:Ability to comprehend technical details in engineering/physical sciences. Strong understanding of life sciences product life cycles, drug discovery and development, and overall commercialization in the engineering/physical sciences industry. Must be able to analyze markets and understand the market positioning of a new technology.
Statutory Knowledges:Understanding of Federal and state laws and policies regarding technology transfer; knowledge of U.S. patent law and the patent process; knowledge of protection (patents, copyrights, trademarks), marketing and licensing of intellectual property.
Communication Skills:Excellent oral and written communications skills and an active listener. Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills. An open and direct style. Self-confidence.
Business Acumen:Must be able to demonstrate the ability to distill from multi-variable business problems critical steps to address and why. Must be able to communicate as well as implement these decisions. Ability to work efficiently across WSU organizational lines and with a variety of external organizations is required.
Organizational Skills:Ability to multitask, showing the energy level and time management discipline; to bring contract negotiations to completion.
Analytical Skills:High degree of skill in analyzing complex situations involving multiple parties, numerous obligations, and competing interests, and in recommending and implementing appropriate courses of action that further the Labs science and technology mission is desired.
Commitment: A scrupulous commitment to the interests of WSU and its research staff and objectives. Well focused, able to initiate, act independently , and make decisions. The ability to maintain confidentiality.
