The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is the state agency that focuses solely on policies, programs, and services for people with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or any combination of these. As Georgia’s public safety net, DBHDD operates six field offices and five hospitals throughout the state within three program areas: behavioral health, developmental disabilities and hospital services.
The main office for DBHDD is located in downtown Atlanta.
Job Description
Job Title: Legislative Intern- 2025 Legislative Session
Pay Grade: APO
Job Summary:
DBHDD is seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join the Office of Legislative Affairs as a paid intern for the 2025 Legislative Session. The hourly rate will be commensurate with time and availability (at least 20 hours per week). This hybrid (in-person internship offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in state government and the legislative process from a state agency lens, while learning about DBHDD’s system of care. The intern will report directly to the Legislative Liaison within the Office of Legislative Affairs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Legislative Tracking : Assist in identifying legislation that may have a direct impact on the operations, policies, or services provided by DBHDD. Craft succinct bill summaries as necessary for team gatherings. Collaborate with DBHDD Senior Leadership to understand the potential implications of proposed legislation.
2. Meeting Attendance and Reporting: Attend committee meetings, stakeholder meetings, floor sessions, and budget hearings related to topics relevant to DBHDD. Provide comprehensive meeting summaries to DBHDD Senior Leadership to keep them informed about the proceedings and decisions.
3. Constituent Services: Collaborate in managing constituent inquiries and issues pertaining to DBHDD providers and services. Employ proficient and timely communication to interact with constituents and their legislative offices. Responsibilities encompass logging constituent cases into DBHDD's database, composing responses, and ensuring prompt updates to legislators and their offices.
4. Legislative Research: Conduct policy research on relevant topics to provide valuable insights and data for the legislative process and DBHDD's mission.
5. Administrative Support : Assist in various administrative duties, including maintaining office operations and supporting day-to-day tasks related to the legislative process.
6. Build Internal Relationships : Develop positive working relationships with internal team members during the legislative session to enhance cooperation and support to fulfill DBHDD's legislative objectives.
Qualifications :
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
• Demonstrated interest in legislative affairs, public policy, or government processes.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in using productivity tools and software for research and reporting purposes.
Note: This position is available to students, recent graduates, and those with a keen interest in legislative affairs and public service. Legislative Interns are required to commit for the entirety of the Georgia legislative session, commencing in January and typically concluding during the first week of April.
