We are seeking a Legal Counsel with a proven record of a practical, problem-solving approach to support the Reuters business team and our news agency products and services. Our customers are broadcasters, print and digital publishers, corporations and governments. Reuters provides its clients with multi-media news solutions to reach their audiences. Our products include video & text feeds, pictures & graphics, packaged content and syndication services.
In this role, you will be responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, presenting commercially viable recommendations, and assuring legal compliance for Reuters contracts. The successful candidate will be a critical thinker with sound business judgment, and someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and works well with cross-functional teams and business stakeholders.
About the Role
In this opportunity as Legal Counsel, you will:
Review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including inbound and outbound licensing for news and editorial content, software/SaaS license agreements, and custom content, marketing, sponsorship and other digital advertising related transactions for Reuters’ consumer properties
Provide commercial legal support to Reuters business globally
Identify and analyze legal issues, help to determine business terms and structure transactions, and provide advice to colleagues that balances business objectives and legal risk
Provide general commercial and compliance advice and training, maintain updated knowledge on legal decisions, statutory changes and industry developments, and advise internal clients accordingly
Partner with Reuters and Thomson Reuters lawyers around the world
Safeguard the Trust Principles, which uphold Reuters’ integrity, independence and freedom from bias
About You
You're a fit for the role of Legal Counsel if your background includes:
Admission to practice in the State of New York
J.D. or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience in commercial transactional work; relevant in-house experience in media and publisher businesses strongly preferred
Ability to work proactively and diligently, with a solution-driven approach to meeting business needs, mitigating risk and managing key relationships
Ability to efficiently identify risk and provide practical, creative solutions to legal issues and communicate effective to non-lawyers at all levels of the organization
Strong analytical, negotiation and legal drafting skills
Experience in managing multiple matters and diverse, fast-paced workstreams, accommodating tight deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently but also collaboratively with clients across diverse geographies and cultures as part of a global team

The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $134,680 - $250,120.
This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity.
