What you will do:
The SPCVS Legal Advocate is responsible for providing services to victims/survivors of sexual, physical and domestic violence, stalking, other crimes and to secondary victims of crimes. This position specifically focuses on providing trauma-informed advocacy, accompaniment and consultation services to individuals who have experienced criminal victimization and are engaged in various systems of justice. These services may include but are not limited to: assistance with completing New York State Office of Victim Services compensation claims, advocacy on behalf of clients, accompaniment through the criminal, family, and civil court proceedings, and consultation of existing clients working with SPCVS staff members. This role requires access to reliable transportation, as work-related travel is a primary function of this job role.
Responsibilities:
Receive case assignments from SPCVS leadership team, this role will assess the needs of the individual, provide options/ relevant information on rights, connect appropriately to resources and develop action plans with the individual.Provide information to clients on the rights and protections available to them under state and federal law.Arrange for translators for legal appointments, court dates, etc. whenever necessary.Accompany clients to scheduled court dates and guiding them through legal processes as and when needed. Works with clients’ attorneys as needed.Provide emotional support to clients throughout any legal processes.Provide regular follow-up with clients to ensure that their needs are met. Ensure clients receive trauma-informed services including individual advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, emotional support and information and referrals through outreach including follow up calls and in-person advocacy. ·Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations, attorneys, and law enforcement agencies that provide services beneficial to clients.Conduct effective outreach to discuss agencies legal services.Effectively use data and case management tools that are currently available through electronic record management to keep statistics and case notes updated in real time.Maintain file-keeping, data entry, analysis, and reporting along with other administrative tasks.Prepare monthly reports, and contribute to any other reporting processes, as needed with leadership.Provide victims/survivors of all crimes understanding and information about the family, civil and criminal court systems.Assist clients in filing police reports and gather documentation for their legal cases.Assist clients in obtaining police reports that have been filed and may need to be FOIL requested.Provide legal referrals, help clients find legal representation, and link clients with other appropriate resources as necessary.Taking thorough notes for clients when on accompaniments with attorney's or in court proceedings for the client to have and review.Assist victims with compensation claim applications through NYS Office of Victim Services and follow up with the claim accordingly.Maintain confidentiality of written and verbal records and information.
What You Will Need:
A Bachelors Degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or related field required.
Previous experience providing legal advocacy to individuals ages 12 and older is strongly desired.
Experience working with victims/survivors of crime is preferred.
Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, Family Court System and Civil Legal System is desired.
NYS Department of Health Sexual Assault Counselor Certification is required but will be provided to the desired candidate at no cost if not yet certified.
Pay Range: $23.40 - $33.69
Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
