The Wits School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified health professionals, to assist in the training of undergraduate students as a clinical educator on the extended clinical training platform. This clinical educator will train medical and clinical associates students in clinical, procedural and communication-related knowledge and skills in the fields of emergency medicine and first-contact care.
Specialist consultants, medical officers and other categories of staff who train students must balance service and training commitments. In a working partnership with these clinicians (employed as joint appointments), a clinical educator reinforces, reviews and expands on the experiential learning in the wards, outpatients and emergency department settings. Key performance indicators include categories for self-development and growth. The clinical educator will also facilitate provision of holistic support for students where needed for their academic success.
This is a fulltime permanent post (subject to probation period).
Location
Location of training sites includes the Southern Gauteng and Northwest Province (Dr Kenneth Kaunda district). The successful applicant will visit clinical training sites, rotating between sites at the different academic health complexes. Candidates must be willing to travel.
Brief DescriptionResponsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the successful applicant will be:
Training of the DFMPC undergraduate students in clinical, procedural and communication-related competence, with a focus on bedside teaching, emergency medicine consultation and small group classroom tutorials
Liaison with joint appointees and other trainers to partner in the training of students on the management of the undifferentiated patient in primary and emergency first-contact care settings
Monitoring of the resources and training at the relevant sites on behalf of Wits SOCM, with early identification of challenges.
Liaison with academic and clinical leadership in Family Medicine, Clinical Associates and Emergency Medicine both centrally and on the extended clinical training platform
Assessment of students' clinical, procedural and communication-related competence.
Identification of vulnerable students and facilitation of psychosocial support.
Involvement in research and publication
Oversight of mentoring programs of students.
Additional Duties
Liaison with other clinical educators, to support their training of students in partnership with site-based clinicians
Engagement with academic/clinical leadership at facilities on the extended clinical training platform, whom have the responsibility for governance of staff and students within their respective settings.
Involvement in activities of the FHS clinical skills unit and clinical simulation unit, to align quality of learning centrally and peripherally
Liaison with university IT-project management team, on matters concerning the IT-related environment (connectivity, data, coverage, devices) on the extended clinical training platform on behalf of the DFMPC and Wits SOCM, with early identification of challenges.
Requirements to apply for this position:
MBChB or master s degree in the relevant field
Registration with the Health Professions Council of SA
Teaching and research experience
Minimum 4 years post community service (or equivalent) clinical experience
Sound knowledge and experience of South African Health Services
Recommended skills/ qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application
Diploma in Primary Emergency Care
Specialisation in Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine or equivalent experience
Postgraduate qualifications in medical/health professions education
Strong interest in technology-enabled learning
Strong collaboration skills
Ability to network
Experience in drafting of in-person and online training materials
