The University of the Witwatersrand Wits School of Clinical Medicine (SOCM) in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified health professionals for the post of Clinical Technology Educator on the Wits extended clinical training platform. Placement of medical and clinical associate students on the Wits clinical training platform is rapidly expanding across within five different Academic Health Complexes in Gauteng and North-West provinces. Students require specific clinical, procedural, and communication-related knowledge and skills, in readiness for their first day of internship. Clinical educators assist in the quality of the academic project on an integrated academic service platform to the benefit of the students, clinicians and patients.
The Clinical Technology Educator (CTE) will be responsible for the enabling, growth and monitoring of the technology-enabled aspects of the undergraduate medical training on the extended clinical training platform. Online apps on tablets and mobile devices are vital to workplace-based training and assessment and to blended learning activities in the School; the CTE will optimise the efficiencies and effectiveness of this training across multiple sites.
The CTE is one of a group of clinical educators in the Wits SOCM, who assist the Department of Health-Wits SOCM joint appointees in the training of undergraduate students. Employed in the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, the CTE must meet targets against key performance indicators including in categories for self-development and growth. The CTE will also facilitate provision of holistic support for students where needed for their academic success.
This is a full-time permanent post (subject to probation period and regular performance assessments).
Location
Location of training sites on the extended clinical training platform includes districts in Southern Gauteng and Northwest Province (Dr Kenneth Kaunda). The Clinical Technology Educator will be based at Wits but will provide support at training sites at different Academic Health Complexes in the clinical training of students. Applicants must be, therefore willing to travel to sites.
Brief DescriptionResponsibilities
Managing and coordinating the technology-enabled academic projects within the School, predominantly at undergraduate level within the School, including student use of eLogbooks and online applications supporting workplace-based training and assessment, as well as their optimal engagement on learning management system platform (Ulwazi Canvas).
Designing and delivering on faculty development in technology-enabled learning and reporting for Wits SOCM programme coordinators & preceptors (Wits & joint appointees); Conducting support visits workshops on how to use applications, and on device management; Developing training documents and manuals for applications
Input on development, monitoring and review of use-case and technology-related solutions, in partnership with developers, including administering regular user evaluations to inform updates.
Managing a support/help desk (with administrators), to help students/staff troubleshoot devices and applications, including issues related to digital connectivity and data management.
Maintaining a high level of awareness of current and emerging eLearning technologies, exploring and evaluating software, applications and technologies that can be applied to skills development in clinical practice.
Initiating research studies of technology-enabled learning, and of clinical decision support systems
Data collecting, analysis and reporting, conducted within a research framework as necessary.
Additional Duties
Liaison with other clinical educators, to support their training of students in partnership with site-based clinicians
Alignment with the technology-enabled learning in the postgraduate programmes of the School
Engagement with academic/clinical leadership at central and peripheral clinical departments, whom have the responsibility for governance of staff and students within the respective settings.
Involvement in activities of the FHS clinical skills unit and clinical simulation unit, to align quality of technology-enabled learning centrally and peripherally
Liaison with university IT-project management team, on matters concerning the IT-related environment (connectivity, data, coverage, devices) at the relevant sites on behalf of Wits SOCM, with early identification of challenges.
Requirements to apply for this position:
A health professional degree or a master s degree in a relevant discipline
Experience in technology-enabled clinical health education
Registration with the Health Professions Council of SA
Teaching and research experience
Sound knowledge of South African Health Services
Recommended skills/ qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application
Postgraduate specialisation in health sciences field
Postgraduate qualifications in medical/health professions education or equivalent experience
Postgraduate qualification in technology-enabled learning or equivalent or equivalent experience
Strong collaboration skills
Ability to network
Drafting of standard operating procedures and training materials
