Posting Details Position Information Job Title Lead Teacher - Early Childhood Laboratory Full Time/Part Time Full Time FLSA Exempt General Job Description This is a professional position responsible for the daily planning and teaching activities of children enrolled in the Early Childhood Laboratory (ECHL). Responsible for developing and executing daily class schedule for own classroom; planning and implementing learning center activities, group experiences, and directed learning experiences; evaluating individual child’s performance of activities and recommending promotion; developing programs for students with special educational needs; cooperatively supervising the assistant teacher; and supervising university students working in the classroom. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director. Essential Job Functions 1. Prepares classroom for daily activities.
2. Develops and implements learning center activities, group experiences, and directed learning experiences.
3. Provides ongoing assessment of children.
4. Communicates regularly with parents/guardians concerning child development and behavior.
5. Uses electronic communication, learning, and attendance technology on a daily basis.
6. Assists in determining child placement and promotion.
7. Develops programs for students with special educational needs.
8. Schedules and conducts parent/guardian conferences.
9. Plans and participates in parent/guardian involvement programs.
10. Supervises and evaluates university student workers.
11. Reports university student workers’ performance to SFA faculty, as needed.
12. Supervises assigned staff and coordinates collaborative duties and responsibilities related to caring for and teaching children.
13. Maintains safe physical classroom and outdoor play space and reports any hazards.
14. Maintains classroom and outdoor environments in compliance with child licensing and accreditation guidelines.
15. Participates in ECHL-related activities and special events. Non-Essential Job Functions Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
1. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university and unit policies and procedures.
2. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university, Texas state licensing, and professional accreditation standards.
3. Knowledge of principles and practices in child growth and development.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
5. Ability to operate a personal computer and learn university- and department-specific software.
6. Ability to work effectively and patiently with children and parents/guardians of children.
7. Ability to collaboratively plan and implement instruction and child care with the assistant teacher.
8. Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
9. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
10. Ability to train and supervise others.
11. Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications. Physical Demands Required Education Bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, child development, family studies, or a related field is required. Must meet continuing education requirements of 24 hours per year and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications while employed. Required Experience and Training One year of experience working with young children or one semester of clinical practice experience is required. CPR and First Aid certifications are required within 90 days of employment. Preferred Qualifications Two years of classroom teaching experience in an early childhood setting and/or primary grades is preferred.
