What you'll do:The Lead Software Developer will report directly to the Senior Development manager and play a major technical leadership role on the Geotab Sustainability product vertical. Geotab Sustainability is focused on helping fleets reduce emissions and lower their fuel costs, through various strategies like driver coaching and adding electric/alternative fuel vehicles to their fleet. As the Lead Software Dev, you'll support and mentor 3 different agile software teams as they solve tricky problems over our large data set, also working closely with our data science team.
In this role, you will spearhead the design and development of innovative Sustainability features within our flagship MyGeotab fleet management software, directly empowering fleets worldwide to reduce their environmental impact. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the team's technical direction, mentoring colleagues, and ensuring that only robust, thoroughly-tested code is delivered to our vast customer base of 50,000+ fleets across 160 countries. With over 4 million devices deployed, helping our customers improve the efficiency of their operations can have a significant impact on global emissions.
How you'll make an impact Independently and proactively identify key areas of architecture improvement, including preparing proposals on achieving the improvements. Lead, oversee and plan the development of scalable code, prototypes, minimum viable products and PoCs. Take ownership of complex/ long-term projects and contribute to their implementation, including defining scope, requirements, communicating project progress, challenges and solutions, while ensuring timely delivery. Collaborate with other development teams on design and implementation of features spanning multiple products. Conduct comprehensive testing and code reviews to ensure that code quality is maximized and best-practices are followed. Provide expert project-leadership and guidance as a SME, to the department and larger organization. Contributes to defining strategic direction, planning the roadmap, and synthesizing feedback to ensure team success. Serve as a cross functional resource across team/department and products to contribute to solving technical issues in development. Builds relationships and serve as a technical point of contact partnering with stakeholders including customers, product managers, cross-functional partners, and external partners and other internal team members. Mentor other developers on the team and work with the team leads to set the direction of the team and guide key stakeholders on execution choices and trade-offs, and advise manager with insights and recommendations to improve the team. Appropriately document system design and architecture such that it is easy to understand, maintain and extend. Support Geotab global strategic initiatives. Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotating schedule. Independently evaluate technical solutions, while contributing to the team roadmap Present and lead technical discussions and training at the department wide level. Stay up to date on emerging technologies and changes in best practices in the development field and present them to senior leadership for consideration. Write complex scalable, high quality and secure software in a variety of programming languages and environments, such as C#, JavaScript, SQL. Serve as a domain expert (ex GBQ), consulting in the area of expertise for the department and across the organization.What you'll bring to the role 10-12+ years of experience as a Software Developer using object-oriented programming to build scalable applications. Experience with Python, Google Compute Engine and Google BigQuery. Proven expertise in design and architecture. Experience with SQL Server and Postgres database design, optimization and writing queries. Knowledge of multiple front-end languages and libraries (e.g. HTML/CSS, JavaScript, XML, ES6, jQuery) and JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Angular, React, Node.js, Vue.js) and experience with UI/UX design . Expert knowledge with optimizing databases (e.g. MySQL). Knowledge of multiple general-purpose programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python) . Proficiency in Git, or some other distributed source control tool, and are comfortable with resolving merge conflicts and renaming branches, etc. Repeated success with mentorship and development of employees, including serving as the mentor for various interns over several years. High accuracy and meticulous attention to detail. Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem-solve to well-judged decisions. Strong project management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions and manage projects through to completion. A strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization. Technical competence using software programs, including, but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides). Able to research and solve open-ended design problems. Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate and document complex technical systems and decisions.
Post-secondary Diploma/Degree with specialization in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent working experience.
