The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a lead lifeguard over three or more lifeguards. Responsibilities Leads three or more lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties. Monitors activities within assigned swimming facility. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. Cleans and maintains the swimming facility. Performs gate control duties. Conducts swimming lessons following prescribed lesson plan. Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety instruction for the activities and skill levels taught. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Positions, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series, 0189. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have six months of general experience which includes (1) any type of work which demonstrates my ability to perform the work of the position and six months of specialized experience which includes knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instruction from the supervisor. OR EDUCATION: Two (2) years of successful completion of education above high school that includes at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience above may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience. 2. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor. 3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 4. Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. 5. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
