**Job Summary and Qualifications**
POSITION SUMMARY:
Collects blood from patients of all ages as required by physician orders. Performs patient registration and accessions lab orders as appropriate. Processes blood to prepare for shipping and testing in all laboratory areas. Responds to phone inquiries in a timely manner and refers problems to the appropriate supervisor. Participates in Quality Assurance activities. Supports staff via training, competency assessment, continuing education and performance evaluation.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
+ Know policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform a variety of routine specimen collection procedures using standard techniques and equipment
+ Know policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform specimen processing duties
+ Respond to requests for emergency service in a timely manner
+ Organize workload within the department and prepare schedule to meet the needs of the institution
+ Answer all incoming phone calls and requests for information in a timely manner
+ Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department, and facility operations
+ Provide leadership for the staff in the department
+ Make decisions and establishes priorities for specimen collection and processing based on established policies and procedures. Work in an independent manner with limited supervision
+ Maintain clean and safe workstation
+ Manage inventory
+ Demonstrate initial and annual competency in phlebotomy and processing, including all computer related functions
+ Document competency assessment for employees performing registration, specimen collection and specimen processing
+ Train personnel in registration, specimen collection, specimen processing and policies and procedures in department
+ Assess competency and participate in perform performance evaluations
+ Facilitate continuing education opportunities for staff
+ Perform and document various quality control and equipment maintenance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations
+ Participate in Laboratory Quality Assurance process by performing quality monitors, process improvement and incident investigations
+ Adhere to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors. Consistently “Puts Patient Safety First” when performing job duties or providing care
+ Maintain appropriate statistical data for department
+ Share in daily workload in the phlebotomy/processing section. Make a contribution to section and department objectives.
+ Prioritize work to assure completion within the assigned shift and according to required TAT
+ Assist Clinical Coordinator with scheduling and coverage when needed.
+ Assists with training of new hires.
+ Any other tasks as assigned.
