Lead Business Data Analyst, Philanthropy

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Office of Philanthropy is seeking a full-time Philanthropy Data Analyst to join the Philanthropy Research and Prospect Management team. This role reports to the Director of Philanthropy Research and Prospect Management and is responsible for developing and reporting on key data analytics and metrics using Ellucian Advance and Blackbaud CRM.

This role will also be responsible for providing research, analysis, tools, and insights to support strategic decision-making within the Office of Philanthropy. Additionally, the Philanthropy Lead Data Analyst will develop and implement a system for the regular review and analysis of data related to giving trends, helping to build a robust pipeline of new and emerging prospects for the Office of Philanthropy’s core teams in Annual Giving, Major Giving, Principal Gifts, Gift Planning and Corporate and Foundation Relations.

The Philanthropy Data Analyst will actively collaborate with the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) and database users across UMB to optimize CRM reports, enhancing the evaluation of office initiatives, philanthropic efforts, and fundraiser performance. Working closely with the Office of Philanthropy, as well as UMB schools and units, the analyst will extract, validate, and present donor and donor pipeline data to provide comprehensive insights into donor relations and fundraising activities, thereby strengthening leadership’s decision-making and analytical capabilities.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Support: Provide strategic and tactical support by analyzing and interpreting business and statistical data to develop creative solutions for business decision-making and planning, particularly in support of fundraising and philanthropy initiatives.
Technical Leadership: Offer technical leadership in the analysis of data generated from various databases, ensuring accurate and insightful business intelligence for internal stakeholders.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Act as the lead analyst to generate, gather, analyze, and prepare data for comprehensive analysis and reporting. Design and implement reports, dashboards, and other data projects related to performance metrics for various internal audiences.
Management and Methodology: Analyze management-requested data, develop rules and methodologies for effective data management, and recommend improvements to existing reporting practices to enhance transparency and data-driven decision-making.
Data Systems and Integrity: Determine specifications for data collection and delivery and develop and maintain data systems necessary for business analysis and reporting. Ensure the integrity of data, including extraction, storage, manipulation, processing, and analysis.
Trend Analysis: Gather data from various systems, solve data issues using standard statistical methods, and interpret trends or patterns in complex financial data. Develop actionable recommendations based on these findings to support the Office of Philanthropy’s goals and broader business objectives.
Pipeline Support: Support pipeline growth and sustainable fundraising efforts through in-house and vendor data analysis, such as wealth screening tools. Provide strategic, ad-hoc analysis as requested to aid in decision-making.
CRM and Technology Liaison: Act as a liaison between the IT team and relevant departments, particularly the Office of Philanthropy, in the development of CRM-related reporting, evaluation, and implementation of technology tools.
Data Integrity and Auditing: Create processes for data integrity checks around reporting data and collaborate with partners to audit and resolve data-related issues. Develop and document business rules specific to CRM analytical processes.
Documentation and Communication: Maintain documentation of current and future reporting processes, ensuring standardization and clarity. Respond to data requests for analysis in a timely manner, keeping stakeholders informed of request status and any changes.
Ethical Compliance: Adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines, including UMB, HIPAA, and APRA standards, in all data handling and reporting activities.
Continuous Learning: Stay current with best practices, trends, and news in prospect development and data analysis to continuously improve data offerings, approaches, and deliverables.
Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned, ensuring alignment with the department's overall strategy and goals.

Position is eligible for hybrid remote work.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, information technology, computers science, mathematics, statistics, finance, or a related field to data being analyzed.

Experience: Five (5) years of directly related experience with statistical or data analytics, business improvement, or quality assurances practices.

Preferred Experience: Experience in working with CRM systems, Blackbaud CRM and Ellucian Advance preferred. Prior experience working with OACS (Oracle Analytics Cloud Service), Power BI for Office 365, Tableau, SQL, Crystal Reports, SharePoint, EXCEL, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and PowerPivot.

Experience in prospect research, prospect management, or data analysis, ideally in a mission-driven, philanthropically supported non-profit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proficiency in extracting, cleaning, analyzing, and synthesizing findings from data sets.
Working knowledge of relational database architectures.
Advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office products suite, especially Excel (pivot tables, formulas, macros, VLOOKUP, etc.).
Excellent organization and analytical skills, responsiveness, and attention to detail.
Understanding of industry best practices and demonstrated ethical compliance as defined by APRA.
Ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and assimilation with other staff members.

Hiring Range: $95,000 - $103,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
