Lead Accounting Specialist

Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._ **Responsibilities:** GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs highly complex accounting tasks providing specialized analyses in various accounting functions such as Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Cost Accounting and the like. Develops and recommends complex accounting and grants management systems, methods, procedures and controls. Develops and/or modifies major policies and procedures for financial reporting and cost analysis in specialized areas. Provides work leadership for lower level employees. Oversees federally regulated time and effort reporting system policy and procedures. Works with University auditors and federal agency auditors. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** + Leads the preparation and coordination of the quarterly University consolidated financial statements, annual footnote disclosures, and financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Coordinates organizational participation in the annual consolidated external financial statement audit. Manages and maintains effective communication between internal leadership and external constituents. Supports leadership by acting as one of the primary liaisons for the external auditors. + Collaborates directly with varying levels of finance leadership throughout the University, acting as a subject matter expert, and providing recommendations on financial reporting initiatives, accounting management systems, methods, procedures and controls. Develops and/or modifies major policies and procedures for financial reporting and cost analysis in specialized areas. + Develops and maintains detailed analysis of various statistical and financial information to be used for financial reporting at the University consolidated level. Performs analysis and tests to ascertain integrity of accounting data, account balances and timeliness of reporting. Makes day-to-day interpretations and decisions on the accounting treatment of financial transactions. + Functions as a team leader within the department, setting goals, developing processes and providing guidance and constructive performance assessment. Supervises one or more lower level staff members and provides training and guidance on general ledger account classifications, journal entry processing and related accruals, account reconciliations, lease accounting, financial system diagnostics and all reporting and analyses as required. + Assumes responsibility for special projects involving financial analysis, system implementations, new accounting regulations, etc. Plans and recommends changes, establishes time lines and activity plans, and coordinates the work efforts of any subordinate staff and team members. + Keeps abreast of new Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) accounting pronouncements and accounting practices as they relate to the higher education and health care industries.
