Position Overview:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSSeeks and maintains advanced aptitude for the evidentiary components that establish breastfeeding as the biological normative infant feeding method.Provides specialized skilled and evidence-based lactation assessment and intervention inclusive of patient history and status from the initial postpartum period through involution or weaning.Identifies potential anatomical, physiological, and psychosocial barriers to breastfeeding success, and develop breastfeeding plan in concert with maternal intentions and goals.Provides competent, compassionate, thoughtful care while maintaining highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to the IBLCE code of conduct.Assesses maternal and infant anatomy. Ensures competent breastfeeding mechanics, including manual expression, functional latch, and effective milk transfer. Teaches strategies and techniques for resolving complicated breastfeeding challenges including ineffective feeding, separation of Mom/baby, tissue trauma, engorgement, and mastitis.Provides comprehensive breastfeeding patient education through informed consent, appropriate use of translation services, and use of adult learning principles.Collaborates actively with multidisciplinary maternal child health team to ensure patient goals met and breastfeeding best practices accomplished prior to discharge.Maintains accurate and respectful patient electronic charting.Maintains current knowledge about appropriate use of breastfeeding aids and tools, including donor human milk and double electric breast pumps.Provides education and support to maternal child health staff regarding infant feeding-specific hospital policy and procedures.Assists with facilitation of Capital Health clinical lactation internship program, including direct precepting and evaluation of interns throughout their placement.Facilitates required maternal child health staff clinical breastfeeding shadowing requirements. Provides shadowing opportunities to nursing students rounding at Capital Health.Maintains patient contact and supports after discharge through follow-up calls to breastfeeding patients.Provides comprehensive outpatient services to any lactating patient at any time in the postpartum period. Make appropriate referrals to multidisciplinary care providers as necessary.Provides support to lactating hospital employees. Facilitates Capital Health Breastfeeding Class.Facilitates Capital Health New Mom’s Group. Provides ongoing guidance after hospital discharge to patients via Capital Health Breastfeeding Support Line.Maintains evidence-based reference library appropriate for patient and staff education.Creates and maintains community-based referral list for specialist evaluations and long-term feeding support.Maintains professional growth and adjust practice to reflect advances in best practices.Participates in department-specific and institutional efforts to improve policy and practice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation:    International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or must attain within one year of hire date. Bachelor’s degree preferred.Experience:    Successful completion of Capital Health's Clinical Lactation Internship Program or 500 hours experience providing clinical lactation care.Other Credentials:    AHA BLS - Healthcare ProviderKnowledge and Skills:    Superior interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.Special Training:    IBCLC in good standing; 15 annual CERPs attained.Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities:    Self-directed. Highly collaborative. Actively seeks opportunities to improve skills and knowledge. Able to accommodate a flexible work schedule.
