 Essential Functions of the Position: 

 Performance of Technical Skills

      ◦     Notifies supervisor of instrument or procedural problems in a timely manner 

      ◦     Test results completed on schedule.

      ◦     Performs proficiency testing per protocol

      ◦     Produces accurate work

      ◦     Follows protocol for running controls and accepting/verifying results

      ◦     Detects discrepancies

      ◦     Monitor several systems simultaneously

      ◦     Calibrating data accurately entered

      ◦     Operates all clinical instruments in a knowledgeable and efficient manner.

      ◦     Orders all reflex tests per protocol        

      ◦     Remedial actions reported and documented

      ◦     Performs and documents all maintenance  

      ◦     Maintenance performed as scheduled

      ◦     Documents important communications with service personnel.

     ◦     Contacts service personnel when troubleshooting equipment and requests service if necessary

     ◦     Instruments are kept clean and disinfected when exposed to bio-hazardous spills

     ◦     Quantity/Timeliness of work that produces optimal  productivity

      ◦     Troubleshoot the system

      ◦     Secure help through the technical support program        

      ◦     Retrieve necessary patient information from Intergy system and LIS, including statistical data from the LIS

      ◦     Recognizes computer problems and takes actions to resolve

      ◦     Knows all aspects of Flex e Suite         

      ◦     Export results to Intergy

      ◦     Generate patient requisitions     

      ◦     Reports computer problems to supervisor

      ◦     Reports QC failure immediately to supervisor or senior tech.

      ◦     QC signed by testing personnel and submitted to supervisor for review.

      ◦     Proficiency testing performed per protocol and submitted on time.

Additional Responsibilities:

      Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and immediately notify a licensed supervisor.

      The technologist is responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of the supervisor, as assigned.  

      Monitors compliance with institutional policies and regulations and standards of external agencies

      Supervises technical and pre-analytical personnel 

      Orders necessary testing supplies

      Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

Capable of preforming all duties according to the State of Florida “Scope of Practice for Laboratory Technologist”, found in statue 64B3-13.003   

      (1) The technologist is responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of the supervisor, as assigned. The assignment of responsibilities must be written and specific.

     (2) In addition the technologist shall fulfill the following responsibilities.

            (a) Performs only those tests authorized by the director.

            (b) Follows the clinical laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test  analyses, reporting and       maintaining records of patient test results.

            (c) Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

            (d) Adheres to the clinical laboratory's quality. control policies, documents all quality control  activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed in accordance with the clinical laboratory's approval policies and procedures.

            (e) Follows the clinical laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the clinical laboratory's defined acceptable levels of performance.

            (f) Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of  test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify a supervisor or director.

            (g) Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's  established performance

            specifications.

           (h) Exercises professional judgment in evaluation, specimen integrity, result accuracy and inter-result validity and takes corrective action as necessary. Such corrective action shall include specimen rejection, recollection, and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizes other skills associated with the practice of clinical laboratory science to ensure validity and accuracy of testing at all times taking care not to compromise patient care with excessive rejections, recollections or delays. If in their judgment a specimen is compromised, the technologist shall include an appropriate disclaimer statement in the report indicating the potential compromised nature of the result and why, in accordance with Rule Chapter 59A-7, F.A.C.

            (i) Participate in proficiency testing samples and ensure that these samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

 Job Qualifications:

      Graduation from a school of Medical Technology

      Board registered by ASCP or equivalent as a Medical Laboratory Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician  

      The Individual must be licensed by the State of Florida as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or a Clinical Laboratory Technician.

      In addition, a Clinical Laboratory Technician must have at minimum an associate’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent and three years of technical experience.
