Job Summary 

The Marathon Martinez Renewable Refinery has a Laboratory Supervisor position available. The Lab Supervisor works in the Refinery Laboratory overseeing daily laboratory operations; coordinates and supports testing for the Refinery meeting the needs of internal and external customers, as well to include lab hourly activities such as: scheduling, training, supply ordering, and general supervision of hourly employees, and is a liaison with laboratory chemists. The position will be responsible for being a leader and champion of an inclusive work environment, quality data, safety, value addition, continuous improvement, and customer focus. The supervisor will display and foster strong and effective communications within the laboratory and between other departments. Successful candidates must possess robust leadership and interpersonal skills, as the position will require interaction with a diverse group of direct reports in addition to Operations, Maintenance, Tech Services, Products Control, and other groups within the refinery. The hours of the position 9/80 or 5/40 and after hour support and on-call as needed 

 

Job Responsibilities 

The Lab Supervisor works in the Refinery Laboratory, has hourly direct reports, reports up to the lab manager and works close with lab chemists.  

The lab supervisor oversees daily laboratory operations coordinates and supports testing for the Refinery meeting the needs of internal and external customers.  

The role coordinates lab hourly activities which include scheduling, training, supply ordering, and general supervision of hourly employees, and is a liaison with laboratory chemists.  

The Lab Supervisor will display and foster strong and effective communication within the laboratory and between other departments.  

Successful candidates must possess robust leadership and interpersonal skills, as the position will require interaction with a diverse group of direct reports in addition to Operations, Maintenance, Tech Services, Products Control, and other groups within the refinery. 

Responsible for ensuring Laboratory Technicians across crews execute product testing and certification accurately, safely, and efficiently in accordance with regulatory testing requirements to meet the production plan.  

Be a champion for safety – ensure technicians have the supplies, equipment, and resources they need to perform daily jobs successfully. Also, foster a culture of empowerment to encourage technician ownership of safety initiatives. 

Oversee the testing and chemical analyses of intermediate and finished products, raw materials, waste materials and other substances. Interprets results and assists in the determination of results criticality and impacts to assure proper control of specifications, quality, and uniformity of products.  

Oversees testing is performed by hourly personnel, and monitors test results to ensure product and operating specifications compliance. Interprets analytical data and conducts out of spec investigations. Support proper use of LIMS and COA systems. 

Foster a culture of teamwork and trust within the lab via consistent and effective two-way communication and by exemplifying Marathon’s safety and quality culture.  

Supports site product quality program. Ensure established quality control practices are followed to make sure accurate and reliable analytical data is reported and recorded according to procedures.  

Ensure adherence to refinery and MPC procedures, policies, and standards as well as to all applicable test methods. 

Participate in quality internal and external audits. 

Regularly communicates with Operations and Product Control teams to ensure proper work priorities and workloads. Responds to requests for expedited or special laboratory results and communicates the results to the appropriate teams.  

Participate in the lab’s efficiency and workload balancing efforts.  Strive for cost reductions, efficiencies, and continuous improvement. 

Provide analytical and technical support to chemists, lab technicians, operations, product quality, and supports laboratory technicians in the performance of their duties. Assists in the execution of more complex laboratory tests as required as well as troubleshooting test result anomalies.   

Manage hourly personnel schedule, work duties, performance, training program, discipline process, and respond to union issues/concerns as applicable. 

Provides first level supervision of laboratory staff. Manage the day-to-day business of the lab including technician scheduling, work prioritization, and communications with customers/refinery. 

Provide routine feedback, coaching, and positive recognition of technician performance. Lead and/or participate in investigations/discipline where applicable. 

Responsible for the daily operation of the lab including troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment including HVAC. Maintains adequate supplies of laboratory testing materials and determining if major repair work should be conducted.  

Ensure lab facility is maintained and generated work orders/permits as needed. 

Provides off-hour support for laboratory and refinery plant operations. 

Conducts required meetings and sessions for training, safety, and new equipment operation orientation. Is responsible for maintaining technician training qualifications and scheduling.  

Ensure adequate job qualification and resource scheduling to satisfy routine refinery/customer testing needs as well as proficiency and special samples, special projects, test runs, and audits.   

Participate in sample rationalization efforts with refinery personnel. Identify and support training and development opportunities for technicians, such as special assignments and job shadowing. This includes job/testing qualifications as well as up-skilling opportunities. 

Effectively facilitates change, while recommending and implementing management systems to address systemic challenges.  Partners with team members to implement change. 

Seek/value input and feedback from personnel.  Lead inclusion awareness activities that help build an effective and high-performing team. Participate in Tap Root investigations within the lab and across the refinery to identify root causes and recommend opportunities 

Minimum Qualifications 

Must have High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of laboratory experience in a refinery OR Must have a Bachelors Degree in Science related discipline with a minimum of 4 chemistry classes and 2 chemistry lab courses and 5 years of laboratory experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or related industry or other third party labs. (Education must be achieved by start date.) 

Must possess proficiency with ASTM Applicable Testing Methods and QAQC Requirements. 

Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook. 

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. 

Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.) 

Must be able to obtain a TWIC card. 

Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship. 

Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications 

Supervisory or lead experience is preferred. 

LIMS knowledge is preferred.
