Lab Specialist

The Gioeli Lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, and UVA NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating the molecular mechanisms driving cancer to develop novel treatment approaches for cancer. The lab specialist will work closely with the PI to use molecular and cell biology techniques to primarily study how inhibition of cancer drivers can be combined to more effectively inhibit cancer growth. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, tissue culture, flow cytometry, general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-qPCR, Western blotting, viral production, etc.), handling patient derived tumor specimens, and using mouse xenografts. The incumbent will also be responsible for lab organization and maintenance, including management of regulatory and safety requirements, and will manage incoming patient specimens.

The position requires frequent use of the scientific literature, appropriate data analysis, and clear data presentation. The successful applicant will demonstrate history of: 1) excellent work ethic and above average productivity; 2) meticulous attention to detail; 3) prior personal ownership of complex project(s); 4) functioning collaboratively; 5) initiative and independence; and 6) creativity and innovation.

The successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in biology, or a related field, and at least three years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while an undergraduate student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in cancer biology and experience with tissue culture techniques.

Starting salary of $36,000 - $45,000 is being offered based on experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
•    Education: Bachelor's degree 
•    Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
