In the plan to create a new hub for mRNA-based vaccine discovery in Cambridge, we are building new laboratories that will be focused on the development of state-of-the-art methods that will be supporting deep product understanding, process and product development, as well as testing of pre-clinical and clinical samples for new mRNA-based vaccines. The Molecular Analytics group at the US Research and Development Center, GSK Vaccines, is responsible for developing state-of-the-art molecular techniques to characterize and evaluate new vaccine candidates. These expertise’s include advanced next-generation sequencing, proteomics, and transcriptomics techniques. We are looking for an initiative-taking scientist and leader with a proven record in utilizing the most up to date genomics/proteomics tools to support the design, development and understanding of best-in-class vaccines, with a particular focus on RNA-based vaccines. Key Responsibilities: To provide expertise in the areas of next-generation sequencing, transcriptomics and genomics. Develop new analytical techniques to advance the mechanistic understanding of how vaccine candidates work and their critical quality attributes. Identify and establish innovative technologies capable of addressing critical questions facing the development of new vaccine entities and platforms. Design and develop new assays and technologies to support RNA vaccine design, production, and characterization. Provide effective and inspiring leadership with an enterprise mindset, ensuring support to professional development and qualification of staff. Ensure the team use cutting-edge technologies and ideas to deliver best preclinical expertise to GSK vaccine projects in discovery, development, and life cycle management. Ensure that the objectives of the team are aligned with R&D and business priorities and team activities are designed and delivered according to project needs. Takes full accountability of management tasks for the team and meet data integrity and quality expectations. Ensures the team delivering assigned activities in the most efficient and resource conscious manner; drives innovation to establish technology in the lab to enhance data quality and resource utilization. Possesses strong scientific leadership to enable collaboration with key scientific internal and external stakeholders. Participate in IP and regulatory filings and publishes in peer reviewed journals Manage a team of 5-10 scientists. Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as needed. Accountable for the management monitoring of the laboratory, ensuring that compliance with the GSK Environment, Health and Safety standards are an integral part of the operations and culture. Basic Qualifications: PhD degree in life sciences with at least five years of experience in a related biotechnology field. Five or more years of experience in the fields of next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics, including Illumina sequencing platforms. Five or more years of experience in single-molecule and single-cell techniques, e.g., Oxford Nanopore, Pacific Biosciences, 10Xgenomics etc. Two or more years of experience in managing a team of scientists and forging collaborations in a matrix organization. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in RNA characterization techniques and RNA-based vaccine technology. Strong track-record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Prior experience in peptide barcoding and sequencing. Fluency in English, spoken and written. Experience in spatial transcriptomics and DNA/RNA barcoding techniques. Background in viral sequence generation and analysis. To be successful in the role, this person must: Demonstrate a detailed fundamental knowledge of an array of different sequencing techniques and technologies. Have practical knowledge in single-molecule and single-cell sequencing technologies and their application to vaccines. Can understand, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data to determine next steps. Be comfortable conversing with opinion leaders regarding highly technical information. Comfortable in managing in a matrix environment. Possess a good balance of creativity and analytical thinking faculties.
