Responsibilities

The Summer Employment Opportunity Program (SEOP) provides temporary summer employment opportunities to children, step-children and spouses of Mayo Clinic employees enrolled in a college degree granting program of study, and is intended to help supervisors accommodate employee vacation requests when seasonal work volumes are high. 

As a Lab Assistant you will work collaboratively with team members and patients with direction from your supervisor. You will be responsible for performing a variety of clerical, processing, and other lab duties that include the following: 

Biological (e.g., blood, urine) specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, and storage. Receiving shipmentsAnswering a high volume of calls from patients and Mayo Clinic staffMaintaining supply inventoryFilingStockingWorking with various computer information systems on a daily basisCleaningPartnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives

Qualifications

To be considered for this SEOP opportunity you must meet the below qualifications. 

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be a child, step-child, or spouse of a current Mayo Clinic employee.Must be currently enrolled in a degree granting program.Must be returning to college in the fall.Must be able to work a minimum of 10 weeks. Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program

Additional Qualifications

SEOP employees should not expect vacation/days-off to be approved during their commitment.A background in science and 1-2 years medical experience is preferred but not required. Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding, telephone operations and other office equipment desired.Knowledge of laboratory functionsMedical terminologyAbility to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.Must be organized, with the ability to prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment.Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents and infectious agents.
