Position Summary:

 

This position evaluates medical records, abstracts and assigns appropriate CPT, ICD, HCPC codes and modifiers following coding and payer guidelines. Coding will include areas in a variety of specialties such as: general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, gynecology, cardio thoracic, neurosurgery and trauma.

 

Responsibilities:


Assigns accurate CPT and diagnosis codes for services rendered based on documentation present prior to approving claim for submission
Assigns surgical CPT procedural codes using the rules established by the American Medical Association and CMS guidelines
Maintains and expands knowledge of coding and sequencing guidelines to ensure that all healthcare information is accurately assigned the appropriate CPT and ICD-10CM codes, according to coding and reimbursement guidelines
Provides all customers of Kootenai Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating performance imperatives each day
Contacts members of the medical staff for clarification in cases where documentation in the record is unclear or insufficient to determine correct coding assignment
Successfully meet accuracy and productivity standards as established by department
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements as well as applicable professional standards
Fully abstracts surgical cases for correct coding
Communicates with providers and has the ability to relay regulatory guidelines to support choices in coding
Ability to code beyond the usual elective procedures such as complex factures, general surgeries such as traumatic injuries from MVAs, complex surgeries, investigational surgeries, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned

     

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications:

 
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Coding certification required; AAPC or AHIMA
CGSC (Certified General Surgery Coder) or COSC (Certified Orthopedic Surgical Coder) certification preferred
5 years of coding experience with 3 years of surgery coding experience required
Epic experience required
Effective human relation skills are required for interacting with all levels of clinic staff, including providers
