The Cable Jacketing Associate typically works as a twoperson team responsible for setting up and operating the jacketing line equipment to produce cable products which meet or exceed customer and internal specifications The Cable Jacketing operation at the company consist of the setup and operation of an extruders and support equipment for the purpose of water proofing strengthen and placing an inner or outer sheave jacket around a fiber optic cable core The Cable Jacketing Associate performs quality checks completes paperwork cleans and organizes their work area and monitors the product being produced
Key Performance Areas
Machine Operation Monitors the Jacketing Line continuously to keep the line operating efficiently and effectively checks and maintains the operating levels of the compound hopper water proofing system steel/aluminum tape Kevlar/fiberglass and monitors the system controls to make adjustments to critical run factors such as operating speed extruder output heat print quality and takeup layer wind
Machine Setup Login to computer an obtain product setup information Review machine setup and makes changes to equipment materials and operating parameters as required Changes cleans and loads the line equipment including the extruder fiberglass/fiberglass servers material payoffs and takeups Sets operating speed ratio tension as determined by product design Reviews factory order and sets up print legend and print length ft/mt as required
Documentation Records process data and quality checks on the Jacketing Process Sheet Completes daily time report and any special requirements as specified Reviews procedure PCN and OI to keep abreast of machine and product changers Completes TPM daily weekly quarterly as assigned task are completed
General Maintenance Performs normal cleaning and preventative maintenance to keep all systems in working order as outline in the TPM Notifies maintenance team leader or manager of problems
Special Considerations Due to the cost and competitiveness of the fiber optic industry extra emphasis must be placed on producing a quality product at the lowest cost possible Emphasis will be placed on improving computer skills and reduction scrap and remakes

Ability to use all foundation skills Reading Writing Verbal Listening Mathematics Reasoning and Computers necessary to apply them creatively to solve standardized and a few nonstandardized problems Decisions are required to adjust the production equipment to meet company standards and customer specifications
The Cable Jacketing Associate must have some broad skills such as basic record keeping and production workflow and monitoring Operation of specialized equipment that involves special training is also required such as the extrusion equipment fiberglass/fiberglass servers and armor forming equipment steel/aluminum accumulation and welding system and cable printing equipment and cable takeup equipment Must have knowledge of related jobs in the department
This is mostly repetitive work a few routine tasks must be precisely performed over and over again to set procedures sequence and pace This requires frequent visual attention to the operation close attention to detail and a great deal of concentration on a consistent basis The associate must adhere to and achieve exact levels of performance precise set limits tolerances and standards On occasion there is variation in the work when different cable construction and trial runs are involved
Requirements
1 year Experience in a similar position
Matric Certificate or Equivalent
6 to 8 weeks of supervised formal company training under the guidance of a company trainer Training will include safety hazardous communication cable design/application dimension measurement written documentation PCN OI and procedures introduction to extrusion jacket line equipment function setup and operation and troubleshooting
After a few weeks of familiarization with the equipment materials and products the trainee will perform daily setup and operation routines on their own with only guidance from the trainer
Mastery of the jacket line operation and product mix generally is accomplished within six months
