The IT Physical Infrastructure Engineer Senior, + Designs, plans, manages, installs, and supports the physical layer of the LAN/WAN communication network. + Responsible for engineering and providing direct support for network infrastructure and related projects. + Manages the work of outside contractors and/or other staff members assigned to network projects. + Confers with managers and staff in city departments to identify network service problem areas and proactively plans for projects on an annual basis. + Provide specifications and obtain all pricing, RFPs, and/or bids from vendors for both hardware and software. + Work under limited supervision. Essential Functions + Acts as a project manager dealing mainly with outside contractors and/or consultants related to the network infrastructure design, implementation, installation, testing, and final approval of the completed projects. + Leads project teams on various projects, prioritizes assigned work. + Manages, plans, designs, engineers, installs and supports the physical layer of the LAN/WAN communication network. + Resolves connectivity issues. + Performs planning, needs justification, and cost benefits of major network systems, physical cabling and network communication connectivity to other computing environments. + Designs, configures and coordinates upgrades, and connections for all devices relying on the network. + Identifies future city infrastructure needs and researches, analyzes and implements new technologies as suggested. + Performs related network services including warranty, installation and configuration. + Ensures constant availability for all network users with minimal downtime. + Monitors network communication throughput, resolving delays and/or downtime within physical segments of the LAN/WAN systems of the city and all network users requiring connectivity. + Analyzes, designs, implements, troubleshoots, and maintains connectivity for all devices on the network. + Investigates user problems, performs diagnostics, analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves user, network and system problems that cross department lines. + Troubleshoots and oversees modifications to enhance network operating efficiency and ensures operating problems are resolved. + Designs and tests local and wide area physical connections to meet the needs and requirements of the user. + Provides technical overview and consultation in design, installation, configuration and monitoring of physical infrastructure. + Designs, configures, implements, and troubleshoots network infrastructure devices for various users for all city departments and divisions. + Purchases hardware and infrastructure devices. + Prepares specifications and plans for implementation of new or enhanced connections. + Utilizes cost-effective methods to reduce the overall total cost of ownership. + Performs other duties as assigned. + Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training + Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related field and + 7 years of progressively responsible experience in installing technical infrastructure, troubleshooting and managing installs, and or + an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. + Functional knowledge of communication standards, IEEE and EIA/TIA Standards as they relate to communications and the Physical Layer within the ISO/OSI Model; + cabling (copper and Fiber Optics) physical installation; + physical connectivity of all media types. + Ability to plan for citywide communication services; + understand and meet citywide requirements and needs; + problem solve in resolving current, and long-term systems issues; + develop purchasing specifications designed to meet citywide needs and uphold standards; + interact with end-users to explain problems and solutions; + display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations; + communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; + complete assignments in a timely fashion; + understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; + maintain prompt and regular attendance; and + perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation. + Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record. Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training + 10 years equivalent experience in installing and maintaining a large technical cabling plant; + problem resolution and trouble-shooting skills, project management skills, manufacture certifications, and communication skills. Licensing And Other Requirements + Valid state-issued driver’s license. + Certified Manufacturers Installation Technician (Copper and Fiber Optics).
