Job Concepts FUNCTION OF WORK: To provide site interpretation to park visitors through guided tours, audio-visual presentations, living history demonstrations and other methods. LEVEL OF WORK: Entry. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Direct supervision from a Park Manager. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May provide functional supervision over museum, visitor center or site personnel as conditions warrant. LOCATION OF WORK: Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism – Office of State Parks. Other locations may be approved by SCS. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Park Rangers by the absence of enforcement responsibility and P.O.S.T. certification. Differs from Interpretive Ranger 2 by the absence of experienced interpretive duties. Examples of Work The purpose of this position is to educate the public on the natural and cultural resources of the stat and to cultivate, protect, and utilize historical artifacts in support of state parks and state historic sites. 30% Site Coordination • Works closely with Administrative Office Educational Services and Public Information teams, and site management to review programs and exhibits for historical accuracy and interpretive value. • Ensures that site programming is consistent with overall site-specific goals and focus. • Performs routine maintenance on trails and associated grounds for guest safety, which requires the use of associated equipment. • Performs various tasks related to program delivery and site safety such as moving canoes & kayaks, etc., which may include lifting up to 50 lbs. • Works with site management in necessary cross training to ensure efficient site operations. 30% Interpretive Services • Conceptualizes, designs, coordinates, and develops new educational programs, interpretive exhibits, audiovisuals, and trails. • Implements site level educational programs and interpretive activities to connect visitors to the site. • Works with educational institutions to provide related interpretive activities for school groups. • Self-evaluates program offerings to ensure consistency and high quality. • Responsible for recording program effectiveness and reporting program evaluations and participation numbers to the OSP Administrative Office. • Initiates, conducts, and review original research on natural and/or cultural resources relevant to the site and prepares a detailed Interpretive Prospectus plan for utilizing the natural and/or cultural resources of the site in active educational offerings. • May attend national and/or regional training to enhance program offerings. 20% Program Promotions • Works closely with Public Information teams in gathering, preparing, and disseminating information about the site to the media and directly to the public. • Conducts research for an drafts press releases for publication. • Answers correspondence from media sources as well as the general public. • Writes, prepares, layouts edits, and produces a variety of promotional and informational materials such as brochures, flyers, and event programs. • Collaborates with departmental agency personnel as well as outside agencies in the update and/or revision of existing promotional and informational materials. • Works with site management to promote special programs throughout the year. • Delivers speeches, lectures, and audiovisual programs throughout the community to professional organizations, school representatives, public and private clubs or groups, businesses, and governmental bodies to enhance the interest of the general public in both the site and its activities. • Establishes and develops partnerships with community based groups, such as schools, civic and social organizations, and relate organizations for the purpose of encouraging use of State Parks educational and fee based offerings in the State Parks system while promoting the generation of revenue. 10% Archives & Records Maintenance • Maintains detailed computerized and hard copy databases of site's historic collections inventory. • Oversees standardized cataloging of the site's historic collections. • Regularly performs conservation and preservation maintenance on site's historic collection items. • Identifies priority items for conservation. • Tracks loans & donations. 10% Grounds & Building Maintenance • Assists with custodial duties as needed inside site facilities. Including but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, stocking restrooms, dusting, cleaning glass, etc. • Assists with care of the site grounds including but not limited to use of mowers, weed eaters, blowers, rakes, pressure washers, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned and performs customer service to a high degree of excellence.
