Intern - Finance & Accounting

I. Job Summary

Do you want an opportunity to drive value for a Fortune 250 company while receiving valuable, hands-on, practical financial and/or corporate accounting knowledge to take back to the classroom with you? 

WM is seeking passionate finance and accounting students for a 12-week internship within WM’s Finance and Accounting groups which will consist of two to three immersion experiences across departments including: Accounting, Corporate Finance, Internal Audit, Investor Relations, Treasury & Risk Management, and others. Successful candidates will be imbedded within our teams where they will have a mentor and the opportunity to network with entire departments to ensure their projects are successful.

Interns will generally work as part of a team within the Finance and Accounting group but may also have cross-functional collaboration opportunities to work with teams that include members from groups such as: Corporate Development & Innovation, Digital, Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, People, or Sustainability. 

Past intern project topics have ranged from analyzing acquisition targets, analyzing profitability across our operations, and many more. Each intern’s rotations, exposure, and activities will be selected based on the Intern’s interest areas, prior professional experience and the needs of the Finance and Accounting group. The position will include opportunities for exposure to WM’s core businesses and WM’s leaders. A successful candidate must be willing and able to build relationships and reach out to other groups within WM to gather information. 

Interns will have the opportunity to see WM’s operations up-close while also learning why WM is considered a leading environmental and sustainability company. 

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to meet and get to know a number of Senior Leadership Team members, including but not limited to our Chief Financial Officer. Interns are encouraged to get to know Vice Presidents throughout the organization to learn what drove their career success as they consider their first steps into their professional journey. 

This position will be located at WM's corporate office at 800 Capitol Street, Suite 3000 in Houston, TX.

 

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily.  Other minor duties may be assigned and may vary by location.

Uses problem solving skills, determines problems, and understand fundamental parts of the problem. Conducts analysis as directed and prepares and delivers insights and recommendations based on analysis. Synthesizes findings and draws conclusions from analyses and makes oral/written recommendations to supervisor and/or manager. Executes tasks directly related to functional projects and/or process improvements. Communicates issues and roadblocks related to areas of responsibility.

III. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

Education: Interns must have a high school diploma or GED (accredited) and be pursuing a Bachelor's degree (accredited) in a field of study relevant to the internship. Completed Course Work Hours: 60.0

Experience: No prior work experience required.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

None required.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Must be available to participate in the 12-week internship program from start to finish (May 19 – Aug 15, 2025). Must be available to work 40 hours per week/standard working hours.  Must have completed at least two years of college and be enrolled as a college student in the fall of 2025. Prefer those in the Houston area as relocation and housing is not provided.  Must be authorized to work in the US.  High preference for students with at least a 3.0 GPA. High preference for students pursuing a Finance or Accounting degree.  Ability to work efficiently and independently while maintaining attention to detail. Able to be flexible and adapt to changing situations while remaining positive. Ability to work effectively in a diverse, collaborative team environment. Ability to think critically and communicate concisely and thoughtfully, in person and in writing. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word).
