If you're someone who enjoys solving problems, wants to learn how real-world systems are built, and is eager to work with modern cloud tools, this is your opportunity. As part of the internship, you’ll gain real-world experience contributing to live systems used by real users, receive mentorship from engineers who love building and teaching, and get exposure to modern cloud architecture and agile development practices. You’ll have the chance to leave your mark through meaningful projects and walk away with a resume-building experience that sets you apart. **Pay rate** The salary for this internship is $35 per hour. You will be eligible for accrued paid sick time per the policy guidelines. Please refer to the Sick Leave Policy. **Job Description** As a Backend Intern, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to the development of APIs, microservices, and cloud infrastructure in a collaborative and supportive environment. We’ll help you build the skills and confidence to launch your engineering career. What You’ll Do: Build and maintain backend services using Scala (or Java/Python, if that’s your strength) Assist in designing and testing RESTful APIs and possibly GraphQL services Learn and contribute to cloud-based solutions using AWS tools such as: Lambda, S3, SQS, Step Functions, and CloudWatch Get hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines to understand how we ship code reliably Participate in sprint ceremonies, code reviews, and design discussions Collaborate with teammates to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code (Bonus) Experiment with frontend or full-stack features using JavaScript **Minimum Requirements** + Enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s program in Computer Science or a related field + Some experience coding in Scala, Java, or Python + Understanding of fundamental programming concepts, OOP, and APIs + Willingness to learn cloud platforms, microservices, and distributed systems + (Bonus) Exposure to JavaScript, or interest in full-stack development + Enthusiasm to collaborate, ask questions, and grow + Preferably with basic familiarity with AWS services like Lambda, S3, or DynamoDB + Understanding of what CI/CD means and why it matters + Curiosity about tools like Docker, serverless functions, or event-driven systems + Knowledge of authentication and security basics _Pearson is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer and a member of E-Verify.
