INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER
Summary You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER in the Production Branch, Ocean Analysis Division, Ocean Projects Department of the Naval Oceanographic Office of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. Responsibilities You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of data analysis and data integration techniques using geographic information system (GIS) computer software. You will produce, in final form, Digital Environmental Reports and Desktops GIS Studies used in the planning of Fleet operations and design of Fleet systems. You will be an expert consultant on environmental matters, including survey planning, oceanographic and navigation data collection, data processing and analysis, environmental analysis, and the installation and use of environmental software packages. You will analyze and interpret a range of environmental data to include, but not limited to, bathymetric, hydrographic, geophysical, and oceanographic data. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with applying advanced principles, theories, practices, and established methodologies in physical oceanography and other physical sciences. Experience with interpreting geophysical and acoustic data and effectively implementing data sets for analysis and decision-making. Experience with conducting oceanographic fieldwork, including the deployment and recovery of instrument systems, as well as performing at-sea data analysis. Experience with the collection, measurement, analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of natural and physical ocean phenomena, such as currents, circulation, waves, and beach/near-shore processes. Experience with developing and applying mathematical methods to solve complex scientific and engineering problems. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess General Physical Science Series, 1301 Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
