Job Summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Kenai Refinery currently has a opening for an Refining Engineer - Instrument and Electrical

The Instrument and Electrical (I&E) Engineer will be responsible for managing and providing technical support to area team projects from early conceptual engineering through detailed design, construction, and project completion.  The I&E Engineer will report to the Area Engineering Supervisor and have responsibility for coordinating and providing I&E support to overall project needs and scope.  Projects will range in size up to about $10,000,000 and will include both capital scope and expense scope needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units. The hours of the position are 9/80's and support TAR once every three years.

Key Responsibilities

Apply project management and instrument and electrical engineering skills and knowledge in all phases of projects from conception to closeout.

Manage multiple projects and assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.

Interact daily with project team members and key refinery stakeholders to ensure that project scope is clearly defined and meets the requirements of the end users.

Develop decision support packages (DSPs) for assigned projects, which include a project’s objective, scope, schedule, benefits/justification, options, and costs.

Present DSPs to management to obtain approval and funding.

Manage and provide direction to engineering contractors.

Initiate and participate in management of change (MOC) reviews for applicable projects.

Provide project support to other area team engineers for the instrument/electrical portion of multi-disciplined projects to ensure delivery of project assignments in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.

Review design drawings, construction packages, and specifications and coordinate input from stakeholders.

Participate in technical reviews with project engineers, engineering firms and equipment suppliers.

Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable MPC and electrical industry standards and recommendations throughout all phases of the project (e.g. NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, API, NEMA, etc.)

Aid in maintenance and training development for new electrical equipment installed on assigned electrical projects.

Support construction and commissioning of assigned projects.

Review and approve proposed changes to electrical process safety information (PSI) documents, including site one-line and electrical area classification drawings.

Periodically review and provide recommended improvement to corporate instrument / electrical specifications based on industry and site-specific experience.

Provide engineering technical support to Turnaround team during planned unit outages.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an accredited institution.

Must have a minimum of 3 year of experience with Instrument/Electrical systems and applications in the refining, petrochemical or manufacturing industry.

Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

Must be highly motivated, team-oriented individual with the ability to interface with project teams and all departments at the Kenai Refinery.

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.

Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Travel Requirement is 5% or less

The hours of the position are 9/80's and support TAR once every three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

More than 3 years of experience with Instrument/Electrical systems and applications in the refining, petrochemical or manufacturing industry is preferred.

Experience with process measurement and control, electrical equipment, safety instrumented system (SIS) design, electrical area classification, management of change (MOC) processes, and industry standards (NFPA, ISA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.) is preferred.

Engineering experience in a refinery setting is preferred.

Experience with ETAP and SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) is preferred.
