Overview Colliers Engineering & Design is hiring an Instrument Person to join our cutting-edge Survey/Geospatial team in Columbia, MD! Responsibilities Will work primarily in the field to assist and develop under the direction of a responsible crew chief. Operate data collection technology and input correct coding to generate line-work and functional daily downloads. Read and understands plans and specifications. Develop and build on fundamental understanding of property boundary knowledge, survey principles, and techniques. Know basic trigonometry, sources of measurement errors, and proper data collection methods. Dig ground using a pick, shovel and other hand tools to search for and locate survey monuments. Cut and remove brush and undergrowth for line of sight. Hold and plum rod in obtaining elevations and distances. Drive stakes to set grades on construction projects. Provide quality customer service and ability to effectively interact with the public and clients on-site. Know, understand and demonstrate safe working/operating methods of assigned tools and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications 2+ years of experience required. Electronic Transmission/Distribution experience is a plus. Must be physically able to work long hours and carry heavy loads (+50 lbs). Possess good interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communication skills. Attendance, punctuality and reliability are essential requirements. Enrollment in survey related coursework preferred. Must be able to work in inclement weather. A valid driver's license and clean driving record required. MVR will be checked and monitored. Travel and out-of-town stay required at times. Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions. Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program.
