We are seeking an Instructor and Director of Student Experiential Learning to inspire students and expand high-impact learning experiences that align with the department’s mission to advance animal agriculture and enhance student success.
This is a 12-month non-tenure-track position located on Tarleton’s main campus in Stephenville, Texas. Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work and teaching requirements indicate. May be required to teach at other campuses or online at the institution’s discretion. Must have the ability to work remotely at the request of the university in times of inclement weather or other special circumstances. This position is not eligible for Visa sponsorship.
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching, mentor undergraduate students, and participate in the necessary operation of the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
20% Teaching and Service:
+ Plan, prepare, and deliver lectures, seminars, and/or laboratory offerings to undergraduate and/or graduate students, which may include general education core curriculum.
+ Teach courses (1 course per semester) in Animal Science under the direction of the Animal Science Department Head.
+ Develop course syllabi, select instructional materials, and design assessments such as exams, quizzes, papers, etc.
+ Assess student performance, provide timely feedback, and evaluate student learning outcomes to inform teaching practices and curriculum improvements.
+ Engage students in active learning, foster critical thinking skills, and provide opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and hands-on learning.
+ Provide academic support and guidance to students through office hours, feedback on assignments, and mentoring.
+ Adhere to university policies, academic integrity standards, and accreditation requirements related to teaching responsibilities.
+ Incorporate innovative teaching methods, technologies, and pedagogical approaches to enhance student learning and engagement.
+ Engage in ongoing professional development activities to stay current in the field, improve teaching skills, and explore new instructional strategies.
+ Collaborate with colleagues, departmental faculty, and university staff to coordinate course offerings, share resources, and contribute to program development and improvement.
+ Participate in institutional service roles including but not limited to, college committees, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.
80% Director of Student Experiential Learning:
+ Works under the direction of the Agriculture Center Director, supervises and participates in farm work including the care of animals and protection of crops.
+ First-line assistant to the Ag. Center Director in accomplishing goals of TSU Ag. Center in providing resources for teaching, research, and service including cooperation with faculty and graduate assistants to assist in meeting the requirements of various courses utilizing the Ag. Center for teaching and demonstration.
+ Responsible for training, supervision and coaching of student workers, interns, and appropriate staff in all aspects of the Ag. Center operations.
+ Responsible for animal husbandry of cattle, sheep, goats and swine.
+ Responsible for planning and executing field work such as plowing, planting fertilization, pasture management, hay production, weed control, and other agronomic practices.
+ Service, operate, and repair Ag Center equipment and maintain operation and maintenance records.
+ Cooperates with other Ag. Center employees to maintain efficient operation of all Center enterprises.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
+ Master’s degree in Animal Science or closely related discipline, with an emphasis in livestock management and /or farm management from an accredited university.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :Knowledge and understanding of disciplinary subject matter at a level adequate for graduate-level instruction; written and oral communication skills sufficient to conduct effective teaching and research activities; ability to interact with students, staff, and faculty in a professional, collegial, and collaborative manner. Must be knowledgeable in livestock husbandry and management, farm machinery, equipment, and metal fabrication. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Organized and record-keeping ability. Must be able to work a flexible schedule beyond normal work hours, including evening and weekend hours.
