Infection Preventionist
The ideal candidate will be CIC certified, have inpatient IP experience along with perioperiative experience.

SUMMARY

The Infection Preventionist is a position within a Section of the Department of Infectious Disease, Infection Control and Employee Health that provides Infection Control support to the entire Institution. The Infection Preventionist develops and implements activities concerned with the management, prevention and control of infections within the hospital. He/she helps to raise awareness about patient safety and improves outcomes. He/she serves as the liaison between all departments and the Infection Control Committee.

Develops, conducts and performs surveillance

Develops and conducts surveillance programs, which incorporate reviews of patient charts and reports to identify nosocomial infections, clusters and communicable diseases. Performs patient assessments to establish the level of patient care practices and infectious potential. Recognizes unusual infections and clusters of infections exceeding endemic conditions and has a working knowledge of known environmental problems that could be detrimental to the patient immune system. Inspects patient care areas as required to ensure compliance with established guidelines (CDC, etc.) and regulatory agencies. Performs surveillance to collect, analyze, and report infection data. Designs, conducts, and analyzes special patient care studies of Infection Control interest. Recommends control measures and reports communicable diseases as required by law to the appropriate agency.

Liaison between patient care related departments

Acts as liaison between patient care related departments, Infection Control Officer, Infection Control Committees and other committees as required. Collaborates with Employee Health Services on all communicable disease exposures and hospital outbreaks that directly impact their patient population. Protects patients from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in all MDACC clinical settings. Works with clinicians and administrators at all levels to improve patient and systems-level outcomes to reduce HAIs and other related adverse events. Develops and directs performance improvement initiatives that save lives and resources for healthcare facilities.

Develops, and presents programs for orientation, continued education, and endures the development, implementation, and adherence to polices

Develops and presents programs for orientation and continuing education regarding Infection Control and related topics throughout the hospital. Must be able to independently develop and present educational programs, presenting programs to groups ranging from very small to auditorium size. Must be able to present research findings in either oral or poster session format at conferences. Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate in-service educational needs of various departments. Must be able to identify problems related to job assignment, utilize experience, training and education. Ensures the development, implementation and adherence to departmental and institutional policies. Assists in the development of Infection Control policies, procedures, protocols, hand washing techniques, etc. Implements procedures for investigation, identification, and follow up of contacts exposed to significant communicable diseases.

Bachelor's degree in a health related field. Education Preferred: Master's degree in Public Health, Biostatistics, Nursing or Epidemiology. Three years patient care experience. With preferred degree, one year of required experience. One of the following: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Medical Technologist (MT) or Microbiologist (M) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Certification (BOC). Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Certification (BOC). Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control.
