General Statement A rare opportunity to maximize technical skills and potential, while enjoying career stability. Join the MSU Bozeman team of technicians responsible for operating industry-leading technologies, including central heat pump plants and geothermal bore fields.

This position is responsible for performing maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of HVAC equipment across the MSU Bozeman campus. Work vehicle, tools, specialized training, clothing allowance, computer workstation, vacation, sick leave, retirement package and an excellent work environment are provided. Duties and Responsibilities Perform maintenance and troubleshoot all types of HVAC systems and commercial and residential equipment, including some limited specialty food service and laboratory equipment. Perform repairs and oversee repairs by outside contractors for specialized HVAC systems and equipment on an “as needed basis.” Work individually or as a team member as job conditions demand.


Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Valid Universal EPA Certification for proper handling and use of refrigerants. High school graduation or G.E.D. plus ONE of the following:

Two (2) years full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience in the HVAC industry. Successful completion of Vocational/Technical institute training (minimum of two years).
3. Familiar with equipment of the HVAC/R industry such as welding, soldering/brazing, digital multi-meter, recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, etc.
4. Demonstrated competence using personal computers and software. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Competence using specialized equipment of the HVAC/R industry such as welding, soldering/brazing, digital multi-meter, recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, etc. Experience with heat pump systems. Experience with the operation of computerized building management/controls systems. Experience with computerized maintenance systems. The Successful Candidate Will Consistently exercise initiative and good judgment. Provide and promote strong customer service to the campus community. Communicate effectively with employees and the public both in person and other forms of communications. Establish and maintain effective working relations with supervisor, coworkers, customers and the public. Effectively operate and respect work-related equipment. Maintain computerized records, work proficiently with computerized maintenance management systems, e-mail and other computer applications as required. Be a successful team player. Represent the department and MSU to others in a professional and courteous manner.


Position Special Requirements/Additional Information Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)

This position can be hired at one of four levels: Refrigeration Technician-In-Training – $37.560/hour
Staff at this level meet the minimum qualifications listed above. Refrigeration Technician I – $39.810/hour
Includes the position requirements of the Refrigeration Technician-In-Training and candidate must possess enhanced technical capabilities such as use of specialized equipment of the HVAC/R industry, experience with operation and maintenance of heat pump systems and operation of computerized building management/controls systems. Refrigeration Technician II – $42.200/hour
Includes the position requirements of the Refrigeration Technician I and candidate must possess enhanced technical capabilities such as ability to independently diagnose control circuits or geothermal heat pump systems. Includes general understanding of campus cooling systems such as chillers, cooling towers and closed loop systems. Refrigeration Technician III – $44.730/hour
Includes position requirements of a Refrigeration Technician I and Refrigeration Technician II. Candidate can oversee programs and complex projects from start-to-finish with minimal supervision such as all aspects of chiller, cooling tower and closed loop system operation and maintenance. Includes demonstrated competence with specialty systems such as lab equipment and food service equipment, and campus geothermal energy districts. Staff must be willing and able to lead/train others in processes and procedures.

An in-house Training Program is in place for Refrigeration Technicians to acquire additional skills.
