Position Overview

The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) provides direct patient care in an inpatient hospital setting. Working collaboratively with the hospitalist physicians, the NP/PA will manage and coordinate patient care for hospitalized patients, assist with admissions, perform daily rounds, and provide medical interventions as appropriate.

 

This job description is intended to provide an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Hospitalist NP or PA role. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list, and other duties may be assigned as needed to meet the needs of the hospital and patient care services.

Essential Job Functions Perform comprehensive assessments of patients upon admission, throughout their hospitalization, and upon discharge.Develop and implement patient care plans, ensuring evidence-based practices and protocols are followed.Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions and monitor patient progress.Prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests as needed, in accordance with hospital policies and state regulations.Provide education to patients and families regarding their condition, treatment options, and post-discharge care.Work collaboratively with the tele-hospitalist team, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.Provide timely and accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to care planning and decision-making.Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, improve clinical outcomes, and increase patient satisfaction. Basic Qualifications Education:Nurse Practitioner (NP) candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program and be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner.Physician Assistant (PA) candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies and be licensed as a Physician Assistant.Licensure/Certification:Current, unrestricted licensure in the state of Pennsylvania, or ability to obtain.Certification through a nationally recognized certification body.Experience:Previous hospitalist or inpatient care experience is preferred, but not required.Experience in internal medicine, critical care, or emergency medicine is an advantage.Skills and Competencies:Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage complex, acutely ill patients.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
