Position Summary

The Hospice Aide/Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Hospice Aide/Volunteer Coordinator provides personal care, supportive services, education, and light household duties in a plan of care developed by the Hospice Registered Nurse Case Manager. The Hospice Aide/Volunteer Coordinator communicates changes to the Hospice Registered Nurse Case Manager and completes documentation to reflect the assigned duties set by the Hospice Registered Nurse Case Manager. S/he utilizes the interdisciplinary team (IDT) to assist in this process. S/he is also responsible for recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and retaining volunteers to adequately support volunteer operations and to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. S/he will ensure the coordination of patient and family needs for volunteer services and will oversee the development and implementation of the plan of care to meet those needs.


Position Specific Responsibilities

Hospice Aide Responsibilities:

Follows specific cleaning and service instructions as outlined by the Hospice Director of Clinical Services.Assists with personal care including, tub, shower, whirlpool or bed bath, shampoo, dry, style hair, nail and skin care, assists with oral hygiene, toileting and elimination with safe transfer technique and ambulation.Takes vital signs as directed by the Hospice Registered Nurse Case Manager.Checks stock and notifies supervisor of supply needs.Gives an assigned patient the attention needed to provide a sanitary, odor free, orderly environment.Sorts, counts, folds, marks, or carries linens, makes beds.Performs light housework including cleaning area around patient, bathroom, and kitchen.Replenishes supplies such as drinking glasses and writing supplies.Transports trash and waste to disposal area.Replenishes bathroom supplies.Completes all assignments scheduled in a timely manner.Assists with family needs and/or post mortem care at time of death.Performs other duties as assigned.

Volunteer Coordinator Responsibilities:

Interviews, hires, and trains volunteers; plans, assigns, and directs work; appraises performance, rewards and disciplines volunteers, addresses complaints and resolves problems.Participates as a member of the IDT, including development and implementation of the plan of care.Promotes the use of volunteers as an intervention to support patient care needs.Actively recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and retains volunteers to support the administrative and patient care needs of the program and Compassus.Adheres to common human resource policies in recruitment and selection processes.Ensures prospective volunteers are interviewed and complete all mandated background and health screenings prior to being offered a position as a volunteer.Performs initial and ongoing competency evaluations to verify training and support needs.Maintains records of all recruitment and retention activities.Maintains accurate record of volunteer utilization as a percentage of overall patient care hours as mandated by regulations.Assists in identifying the need for intervention of other IDT members.Effectively communicates patient and family needs to IDT.Provides education about volunteer services and role of the volunteer to members of the IDT.Recognizes issues or concerns and escalates appropriately.Prepares reports, in-services, and other documents to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of the volunteer program as requested.Utilizes a variety of means to communicate with and retain active volunteers, which may include: newsletters; email campaigns; gatherings/ celebratory events; meetings.Delivers high quality training for new volunteers.Delivers at least 4 in-services per year for active volunteers.Manages volunteer services through accountable awareness of volunteer utilization, documentation and plan of care involvement.Assigns patient care and administrative volunteers, providing oversight for activity and documentation requirements.Attends and participates in community events, promoting Compassus as a place to volunteer.Develops and performs public service announcements regarding hospice volunteerism.Performs the role of the patient care volunteer when needed to support plan of care interventions.Works with all members of the hospice team to promote Compassus in the community.Leverages community events, professional contacts and volunteer network to promote Compassus and hospice.Operates within established budgetary guidelines.Manages expenses of volunteer program.Seeks resources which maximize outcomes.Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED highly preferred.Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.One (1) to three (3) months related experience as a Hospice Aide and/or training highly preferred.Experience in Social Services, Human Services, Resource Management or related field is helpful.Prior experience managing volunteer services or non-profit organization is highly desired.


Skills

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Strong organizational and time management skills. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends. Must be able to travel. Must be able to tend the geriatric and the terminally ill.


Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) highly preferred.In states where licensure is not required (AL, AZ, CT, GA, IA, IL, KS, LA, MA, ME, MI, MS, MT, NM, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, WV), applicants must meet one of the following:They are already a licensed/certified aide; orThey have completed a state-approved nurse aide training program AND have been continuously employed in that capacity for the previous 24 monthsCurrent CPR certification required.


State Specific Requirements
California

State certification as a home health aide.


Colorado

Completed state training program AND certified via DORA.


Indiana

Aides required to be registered on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, licensure is not required.


Missouri

Licensed/certified as a Nurses’ Aide; orHave completed a nurses’ aide training program AND employed as a nurses’ aide for the past 24 months if not licensed/certified; orEnrolled in a professional or practical nursing program for at least four (4) months, that included a clinical rotation within the past five (5) years and has successfully passed a Fundamentals of Nursing course (must provide transcript and letter from the program director on school letterhead verifying BOTH clinical rotation and successfully completion of Fundamentals of Nursing course).


New Hampshire

Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) required for hospice employment.


New Jersey

Certification as a Homemaker – Home Health Aide; or is a long-term care CNA.


Virginia

Aide certified required to practice in the state.


Wisconsin

Aides required to be certified and listed on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry.


Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In a healthcare setting, exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.
