Position Summary
Performs preparation of Cytology Non-Gyn and Gyn specimens and performs designated histology tasks to include frozen sections, tissue submitting, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Performs Cytology prep on all NON-GYN and GYN specimens. Operates stainer and coverslipper for Cytology N-GYN and GYN slides; knowledge of manual staining and/or coverslipping as needed. Accessions Thinprep specimens in to the LIS using the proper prefix; making sure that all patient information is correct on the requisitions and the specimen containers as needed. Registers MLW Cytology/Surgical specimens as needed. Follows section protocol for specimen rejection for hospital and MLW cases. Downloads to print bar coded GYN slides. Change and/or rotate GYN and N-GYN stains per section protocol, making sure that the staining reagents are changed as needed to obtain optimal staining results. Pull out Thinprep specimens for HPV, order in LIS and deliver to molecular lab. File all Cytology slides. Print Cytology labels for the following day. Change Cytology FNA stains and reagents per section protocol. Routine Daily Maintenance of instrumentation used in Cytology. Assist in Cytology FNA procedures as needed. Performs frozen sections as needed. Downloads and Prints cassettes for surgical specimens as needed. Assist in submitting surgical tissue specimens – making sure that patient data is verified against the specimen label, specimen container, and LIS information. Enters block information in to Meditech to include number of cassettes and pieces of tissue per cassette Record daily Quality Control of all instruments used in job description, with proper documentation such as temperature, cleaning records, and troubleshooting with proper documentation in the Troubleshooting Log Book. Maintains inventory of supplies/reagents within job description and order supplies/reagents accordingly Education & Experience Requirements NYS license or permit required. Degree in Medical Technology or related science preferred with one year of relevant hospital experience preferred. Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc. The position operates in a professional office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as phones, computers, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines located at multiple locations within the building. Salary Range: $65,386.31 - $95,090.19 (Based on full-time equivalent)
