BMO’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) High-Risk Unit is seeking a dedicated Investigator to join our team.

The High-Risk Unit is accountable for the intake and periodic file review of customers considered as High Risk. Customers are appropriately risk scored within the respective onboarding systems based on CDD and EDD information captured during onboarding and CRS methodology. Customers classified as High Risk are subject to periodic monitoring by the High-Risk Unit. As an Investigator in our High-Risk Unit, you will conduct detailed file reviews of high-risk clients across various sectors, including personal banking, small businesses, and large commercial client.  In this role, you’ll be exposed to various types of high-risk industries and individuals, including, but not limited to ATM operators, Casino Gambling, Used Car Dealers, NBFI, and Politically Exposed Persons.

Leveraging our key platforms, Actimize and CMCIF/Fenergo that are the systems of record for high-risk customers tracked by the FIU, you will perform thorough reviews every 6, 12 or 24 months, based on the complexity and risk associated with each case. Your insights will contribute directly to our AML compliance efforts, helping protect BMO and its customers from financial risks.

Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct detailed reviews of high-risk customer files, analyzing transactions, business nature, and risk attributes.

- Prepare well-structured, analytical narratives and summaries that provide insights into potential risks.

- Use Actimize and CMCIF to analyze data and pull necessary documentation for your reviews.

- Support the team by occasionally taking on additional cases as needed to meet departmental goals.

- Act as a subject matter expert for less complex reviews

What We’re Looking For:

- AML Experience: Minimum of 2+ years in AML investigations, fraud analysis, or related fields within the financial services industry.

- Analytical Skills: Strong investigative and analytical capabilities to identify unusual activities, spot red flags, and assess compliance risks.

- Research & Writing Abilities: Exceptional written communication skills for compiling detailed investigative reports and summaries.

- Independent Productivity: Ability to manage your time and caseload independently while meeting monthly review targets.

- Career Focused: Interest in growing within BMO’s AML landscape and advancing to more senior roles over time.

Work Model & Locations:

This role requires in-office presence twice a week at either our Omaha, NE, Chicago, IL, or Naperville, IL office locations. You’ll have the autonomy to manage your caseload within the hybrid schedule, aligning with our flexible approach to work.

Conducts investigations to identify, assess, decision and report on activity that indicates an exposure to financial crimes. Ensures potential threats and investigations are evaluated, documented, managed and escalated by following standard operating procedures. Provides subject matter expertise and oversight of criminal risk by following a disciplined and intelligence-based approach to detection and research of activities and events in alignment with criminal risk frameworks and standards to ensure compliance as well as support trending, analysis and insights generation.

Develops solutions and makes recommendations based on an understanding of business strategy and stakeholder needs.

Provides advice and guidance to assigned business/group on implementation of solutions.

Helps determine business priorities and best sequence for execution of business/group strategy.

Conducts independent analysis and assessment to resolve strategic issues.

Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders (e.g. law enforcement agencies and other Financial Institutions to collaborate in investigations).

Ensures alignment between stakeholders.

Integrates information from multiple sources to enable more efficient processes, enhanced analysis and/or streamlined reporting.

Identifies business needs, provides content/develops tools and training programs; may include delivery of training to audiences.

Analyzes and assesses incidents or cases that may be complex and require knowledge on several different product lines.

Prepares reports, notifications and activity/case filings per guidelines and standards.

Supports the planning and implementation of programs designed to minimize risk exposures and maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the analytical processes.

Provides input and develops recommendations for process and customer service improvements.

Stays abreast of financial crimes risk trends, relevant regulations and compliance standards.

Monitors and analyzes various information provided through detection systems, tools, reports, or manually to evaluate, investigate and determine required actions.

Supports the collection of evidence and information to be used for multiple purposes including incident reports/filings, loss prevention, litigation and criminal prosecution, management information and statistics, and process improvements.

Documents actions and information found throughout the investigation to develop and maintain account/case files.

Develops and maintains an understanding of the financial crime management processes, frameworks and techniques.

Gathers and formats data into regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.

Analyzes data and information to provide insights and recommendations.

Executes routine tasks such as service requests, transactions, queries etc. within relevant service level agreements.

Provides notification, information and instructions to internal/external stakeholders related to incidents as necessary.

Focus may be on a business/group.

Thinks creatively and proposes new solutions.

Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules.

Works mostly independently.

Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

Typically, between 3-5 years of relevant experience and a post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of risk and regulatory requirements as they apply to financial crimes is an asset.

Knowledge of banking products, services, processes, and organization is an asset.

Specialized knowledge from education and/or business experience.

Salary:

$44,000.00 - $82,000.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
