I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Prepares, processes, and sterilizes materials and equipment for the surgical, emergency and respiratory care departments.
2. Properly prepares and sterilizes materials and equipment according to department protocols
3. Performs required monitoring of sterilizes and ensures proper functioning of the equipment
4. Ensures proper infection control at all times, consistent with departmental protocols.
5. Monitors the condition of instruments and surgical kits and replaces as necessary.
6. Implements replacement of code carts for hospital wide system.
7. Understands and demonstrates proper operation of sterilization equipment, including steam sterilizers, ETO (Ethylene Oxide) and washer disinfectors.
8. Understands and implements emergency management trouble shooting and communicates equipment issues to Director and Biomedical Engineer for resolution.
9. Knowledgeable about contingency planning.
10. Assists the operating room staff with patient transfers, specimen transport and the cleaning and restocking of operating rooms and supply areas
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Demonstrates competence and is eligible to take the qualifying national certification exam.
2. Completion of central sterile and medical terminology courses required
3. High school graduate or equivalent
Preferred:
1. Preferred certification is attained
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Demonstrates a professional, scientific knowledge of the intricate processes involved in central sterile operations
2. Graduate of program designed to provide fundamentals of hospital central service technology and care/handling of surgical instruments and equipment.
3. Participates in concurrent educational programs related to sterilization and infection control
OR equivalent combination of the above
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
