The warehouse is roughly 500,000 sq. ft. and includes a mechanic shop, warehouse inventory, storage, a receiving department for incoming deliveries and shipments, and work stations for Maintenance, Operations and Engineering divisions of the agency. The Helper will assist with receiving, storing, maintaining and issuing over 1,400 items listed in inventory. No Civil Service test score or assessmentis required in order to be considered for this vacancy. Job Concepts Function of Work: To perform a wide variety of physical tasks in the maintenance and repair of state facilities and intermittent leaderman functions. Level of Work: Entry. Supervision Received: Close from a skilled employee when assisting that employee (performing skilled trades functions). General supervision is received from foreman when performing repetitive low skilled tasks. Supervision Exercised: Periodic leaderman supervision may be exercised over laborers performing simple tasks (grass cutting, loading, and unloading, etc.) Location of Work: All agencies, statewide. Job Distinctions: Differs from that of Laborer in that it performs some semi-skilled repetitive tasks under general supervision and may work as a helper to a skilled trade job under close supervision and limited potential for a leaderman role over laborers. Differs from Roads and Grounds Keeper as the latter job performs duties related more to roads, highways and heavy (levee, road shoulder, gravel road, etc.) grounds maintenance. Differs from Apprentice as that job is designed primarily to provide an understudy function for a skilled trade job. Examples of Work + The incumbent's line of responsibility includes assisting the procurement department with regular maintenance requests, forklift duties, cleaning, and inventory tasks. 40% Inventory + Assist procurement staff with keeping updated records of inventory and activity logs + Stock shelves with incoming inventory items + Inspect inventory items for quality + Assist employees with signing out materials + Discard items that are expired and unable to use 30% Cleaning + Sweep and mop floors throughout the warehouse using various cleaning equipment and machinery + Empty garbage cans and take out trash to dumpsters, this includes discarding broken pallets + Pull pallets and materials from shelves for deeper cleaning of storage areas + Regularly dust pallet storage areas and inventory shelves + Organize and maintain shelves and pallets throughout the day + Inspect and report signs of infestation 25% Forklift Operator + Unload materials from incoming delivery vehicles + Place materials in assigned sections of SLFPA- warehouse + Manage stockpile of products on pallets or crates for storage/shipment + Coordinate with procurement staff to identify damages and report shortages or quality deficiencies + Inspect machinery and preform preventative maintenance repairs 5% Other + Deliver materials to various workstations and locations of the SLFPA-E + Pick up and or deliver goods to and from vendors as needed + During storm events: stock and refill refreshments in kitchen, assist with plating meals, wash dishes, and run errands related to replenishing goods needed for the duration of storm event. NOTE: The SLFPA-E is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the agency's mission is to protect life and property across Orleans, East Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes from tidal surge, wind-driven water and flooding. In emergencies during hurricane/tropical storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situation until released from duty by the appropriate authority.
