Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Description Please note: This posting is in anticipation of future openings for Mechanics at Fort Cavazos. This is not posted for a currently vacant open position. Performs organizational, intermediate level maintenance/modifications on military equipment, sub-systems, support equipment and related systems such as M1 tanks, M2/3 Bradley fighting vehicles, M113 series track vehicles, M88 recovery vehicles, AVLB bridge launchers, cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, pneumatic tools, and a wide assortment of wheel vehicles including trailers. **Essential Responsibilities:** + Performs organizational, intermediate level maintenance/modifications on military equipment, sub-systems, support equipment and related systems such as M1 tanks, M2/3 Bradley fighting vehicles, M113 series track vehicles, M88 recovery vehicles, AVLB bridge launchers, cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and a wide assortment of wheel vehicles including trailers. + Diagnoses system malfunctions, isolate causes, and correct deficiencies. + Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using Technical Manuals (TM), lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools. + Inspects, repairs, and replaces components, engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies. + Trains team members in solving unusual maintenance problems by analysis and troubleshooting. Identifies parts in repair manuals and places order request for needed parts. + May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, may adjust and maintain machinery such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and any other related machinery. + Recommends revisions to maintenance procedures to improve efficiency and ensure quality workmanship. + Sets up and operates complex computer controlled automatic test equipment (ATE) to test and troubleshoot various components and assemblies of electronic equipment such as the Direct Support Electrical Test Systems (DSETS), modules which contain integrated circuits, and printed circuit boards and assemblies. + Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested. **Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:** While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or fee; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues. **Other Responsibilities:** **Safety** - Amentum enforces a safety culture whereby all employees have the responsibility for continuously developing and maintaining a safe work environment. Each employee must read and understand his/her Quality Management and Customer Satisfaction responsibilities. **Procedure Compliance** - Each employee must read, understand and implement the general and specific operational, safety, quality and environmental requirements of all plans, procedures and policies pertaining to his/her job. **Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:** + High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. + Minimum three (3) years of recent heavy equipment experience gained either in military or commercial application. + Bradley and/or Turret experience is highly desired. + Must know theory and principles of engine operations and accessories and components. + Read, interpret and use vehicle maintenance manuals, service bulletins, wiring/schematic diagrams, data tables and other specifications to determine feasibility and method to repair or replace malfunctioning or damaged components. + Must be able to inspect, repair and operate. Must possess basis skills in computer operations. + Must have ability to read, interpret and apply TM instructions, publications, and safety rules. + Must have ability to write routine reports and correspondence. + Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle. + Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location. + Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and a government background check. + Must be able to speak, read and write English.
