Under the direction of HSE management, specialist is responsible for developing, coordinating, training, compliance auditing and providing professional consultation and technical expertise associated with environmental, health and occupational safety matters. The specialist works with internal and external stakeholders to provide a safe environment and to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations.   

What will you be doing?

Thoroughly investigating workplace incidents, near misses, and accidents to identify root causes, contributing factors, and potential corrective actions. Designing and implementing comprehensive safety programs across different departments, including training materials, safety procedures, and risk mitigation strategies. Designing and delivering specialized safety training programs for employees at various levels, including advanced topics and refresher courses. Meet with site/department managers, as needed, to augment and support efforts in moving to a best practice organization in terms of health, safety and environmental compliance.Providing technical safety advice to management, supervisors, and employees on complex safety issues and potential hazards. In coordination with management, design systems to recognize and eliminate occupational safety and health hazards, including hazards which are recognized as risks to employees.Develops, submits, or responds to request to address safety issues or items brought forward by management and employees. Represents S+N and serves as a liaison with applicable internal and external departments and entities regarding environmental and occupational health and safety matters.Contributes to the development of site HSE program budget and monitors vendor performance against funding and expense requirements.Establishes and maintains relationships with vendors that are qualified to assist with Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Materials matters.Organizes and or conducts health surveys utilizing appropriate sampling strategies, analyzes data and provides follow up reports for stakeholders.Works with management in developing and maintaining the data for the various licensed management software systems used.Collecting, analyzing safety data, and generating detailed reports to track trends, identify areas for improvement, and present findings to stakeholders. Prepares and delivers recommendations to site /department managers, safety committee representatives, departments, managers, and employees.Prepare and submit required internal and external HSE data as required.Leading safety-related projects, including implementation of new safety initiatives, system upgrades, and safety audits. 

What will you need to be successful?

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health (OSH), Industrial Hygiene, or related scientific or technical field.

Experience:

Must have at least five years of experience in occupational health and safety.Knowledge of relevant industry safety regulations and standards. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify root causes and develop effective solutions.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees at all levels and provide safety training. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools: Excel, WORD, and PowerPoint

License/certification:  Must possess a valid driver’s license

Physical Demands:   Work is performed both in an office environment and in the site with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule.  Position involves occasional bending, standing, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching below and above shoulders, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds while performing job duties. Walking, climbing ladders, entering cramped and difficult locations and dusty/dirty environments, may be part of activities. Working hours may vary and occasional evening and/or weekend work is required. Occasional lifting, guiding and/or carry of materials may be required. May be exposed to potentially hazardous conditions, noise, and temperature extremes.

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $80,000 - $100,000 USD annually (or hourly) The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. In addition to base pay, we provide competitive bonus and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, medical leave programs, parental leave, and generous PTO, paid company holidays annually and 8 hours of Volunteer time and a variety of wellness offerings such as EAP.
