Position Summary & Responsibilities:
The HSE Specialist 2 will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) culture at bioMérieux's St. Louis site. This position will support the site by managing complex HSE initiatives and driving continuous improvement. The HSE Specialist II will serve as a strategic partner, responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing key elements of the HSE Management System, with a focus on regulatory compliance, risk management, and sustainability.
With a focus on promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility, the HSE Specialist II engages in cross-functional collaboration to ensure compliance with HSE regulations and standards. This role requires strong leadership, strategic planning, and communication skills to effectively coordinate with all functions across sites and address HSE concerns. By supporting multiple teams and providing HSE support at the site level, the HSE Specialist 2 plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and environmentally conscious workplace environment.
+ Lead the deployment and continuous improvement of HSE programs at the site level, including Job Safety Analyses (JSA), risk assessments, environmental assessments, and incident management.
+ Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local Safety and Environment regulations (ISO 14001 / 45001), bioMérieux Global HSE policies, and industry best practices to protect team members, visitors, and company property.
+ Act as a subject matter expert in safety protocols and environmental protection, guiding site teams on compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, and NFPA regulations.
+ Lead HSE-related projects, including new equipment installations and facility modifications, ensuring adherence to user requirement specifications and HSE standards
+ Drive continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing HSE performance data, identifying trends, and implementing corrective actions.
+ Manage HSE site policies, procedures, and training programs to align with bioMérieux’s global HSE strategy.
+ Support and lead sustainability initiatives in line with bioMérieux’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals.
+ Coordinate environmental impact reduction projects, including waste minimization, energy conservation, and resource efficiency.
+ Lead HSE near miss/safety suggestion and inspection programs, ensuring corrective actions, inspections, and evaluations are executed.
+ Ensure required regulatory reports, permits, surveys, regulatory fees, and compliance plans are completed and submitted as required.
+ Serve as lead technical resource regarding general safety, OSHA compliance, ISO compliance, biosafety, chemical safety, and environmental compliance.
+ Support teams managing controlled lab environments in Industrialization and R&D, including a BSL-3 lab, warehouse, and machine shops in Maintenance.
+ Assist with developing and coordinating emergency plans and response procedures, including ownership of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for a 24/54 operation.
+ Manage compliance with federal and state medical surveillance, ensuring employees maintain medical reviews, occupational, and non-occupational medical restrictions.
+ Establish and maintain partnerships with HSE leaders in North American and Global HSE teams.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Operations, and Quality, to integrate HSE considerations into site activities.
+ Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to site personnel to foster a proactive HSE culture.
+ Assist with the site security program, on-site service supplier authorization, badge access procedures, routine safety/security walks, and safety equipment inspections.
+ Develop and deliver HSE communications, including performance reports, safety alerts, and regulatory updates.
+ Lead the site waste management program to minimize impact on landfill through alternative waste disposal methods and identify cost-saving projects, acting as a Stakeholder for Continuous Improvement projects.
Education, Skills, & Experience:
+ Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of HSE or related technical field experience required.
+ 3+ years of experience within an ISO 14001 / 45001 certified organization preferred.
+ 3+ years of experience with continuous improvement preferred.
+ 3+ years of experience with Environmental Sustainability initiatives preferred.
+ Knowledge and understanding of US compliance regulations including DOT/OSHA/EPA/NFPA preferred.
+ Experience in a high throughput manufacturing environment preferred.
+ Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification preferred.
+ Ability to read and interpret technical literature and remain current on regulatory landscape.
+ Ability to develop a strategy to determine action plans for risk reduction.
+ Ability to review the regulatory landscape to identify and mitigate non-compliant conditions
