Head of Property & Casualty

Key Objectives 

The position is responsible for:

Overall responsibility for Property, Technical Lines & Marine Insurance. Work with product line managers reporting to the head of short-tails to develop and execute strategies designed to drive profitable growth, aligned with the companies overall strategic underwriting direction.   Formulate and implement business plans together with Segment leaders & distribution channels to achieve the company’s objectives.

 

Major Duties & Responsibilities 

Financials:  Establish and execute strategies to meet both top & bottom line financial plans of Property (including SME), Technical Lines & Marine. Work with the Short-tail product managers to ensure ownership of the country’s short-tail P&L.  Drive profitable growth.  Accurately Forecast short-tail renewal and new business numbers, rate change and retention.  New business focus is key. Ensure timely and accurate reporting as required.
  Leadership: Set annual objectives/KPIs for Short-tail UWs, and lead, develop, engage and retain UWs to maximize performance. Manage UWs’ day to day activities, and liaise with short-tail Product Line Managers and other Division Heads to deliver profitable growth, and ensure acceptable service standards are achieved.
  Portfolio Management of business and ensure the portfolio underwriting integrity of the P&L. Robust governance of risk selection criteria, underwriting process & underwriting strategy. Ensure underwriting standards and guidelines are in place in respective lines of business and are strictly adhered to, including the following: Execute on portfolio review action items, UW Audit process and related operations. Ensure Peer Reviews are done in a timely manner Review Underwriting Capability and Authority Needs Understand & own the underwriting processes for your respective LoB, ensuring controls are in place and that best practice standards are adheared to. Claims – Work closely with the Claims team to increase understanding of clients and portfolios.
  Product Development: Develop distribution & segment specific product strategies utilizing market incites and competitor analysis to prioritise bringing product & pricing propositions to market which will give Chubb a competitive advantage and support profitable growth. Key focus areas will be on. De-tariff mono-line fire SME Package Digital Micro SME Bundled Construction Industry Proposition.

 

Service Excellence – Overall responsibility for Service Performance of Short-tail underwriting Teams.  Work closely with the head of small commercial & P&C Operations manager on platform and digital product development strategies, to allow for onboarding of more products onto platforms. The aspiration is for 100% of Chubb’s short-tail small commercial business to be traded electronically in the coming 2-3 years.  Set, measure and report on key service KPI’s, focusing on TAT, consistency of messaging. Work with PLM’s P&C Operations Manager, to identify ways to simplify processes, re-align work to maximise underwriter capacity.
  Resourcing and Technical Development Responsible for resourcing within the short-tail underwriting team, including recruitment, talent development, succession planning ect. Work closely with PLM’s to ensure all short-tail underwriters have all the authority needed to serve line of business needs
  Reporting Ensure short-tail teams have regular performance reports available monthly on key KPI’s for each of the teams   Ensure regular progress reporting on key strategies / initiatives are available to the head of P&C Support Head of P&C, PLM’s & Operations Manager on Statutory, Regional and Local Management reporting is required with input required from the corporate division.  Ensure accuracy of country universe of accounts within the various databases.
  Internal Engagement: Work with the Head of P&C to ensure that processes are in place to ensure close collaboration between underwriters with short-tail and across the liabilities lines to enable a strong multi-line approach. Build close relationships with regional product line managers to facility, good communication and smooth ease of doing business.
  Market identification & Appetite Mapping:  Map market opportunity and universe of major accounts against Chubb targets and appetites across all product lines and produce and execute resulting business plans. 
  Pipeline Generation & Management: Ensure that each line of business are a comprehensive approach to pipeline management. Coordinate with PLM’s & distribution to drive sales strategies for target accounts. Develop a culture of cross-selling between lines of business to increase product and client penetration rates. Ensure performance metrics are tracked and utilised to drive / adapt strategy accordingly to maximize success.
  Distribution Management:  Identify and foster key broker/agent relationships to access the decision makers, develop strategic plans together with each of these partners to promote growth and plan ahead. Work in parallel with Product Line Managers and other Division Heads to promote strong multi-line prospecting culture.  Market and Competitor Intelligence:  Know the marketplace and understand competitive landscape, working with internal stakeholders to ensure strategies are most appropriate to meet opportunities.
