Job Title: Head of Engineering Delivery – Large Project
Base location: Cheadle / Templecombe. We can offer a hybrid approach to office and remote working. We would expect 3 days per week as the standard days on Cheadle / Templecombe site.
Travel Percentage: Up to 40%
Primary Purpose of the Role:
Provide Engineering cross discipline delivery leadership, decision authority and resource optimisation across the Sector. Provide advice and direction through a hierarchy of Engineering Delivery Managers (EDM) product and project teams in order to:
Ensure accurate estimates and baselines are established for product development and/or projects
Enable the transition from Presales, through Bid, to Run phases of projects
Achieve all delivery objectives (schedule, technical, financial and quality) across the Sector product development activities and projects.
Identify technical risks/issues early and drive effective mitigation of these across the Sector
To support the Engineering Director in resolving Engineering Issues in a Sector from an engineering perspective providing necessary input into the functional resourcing strategy, ensuring that rational and clear Demand is placed into the Integrated Business Planning (IBP) tool by Sector Programmes and optimising resources allocated to projects within the portfolio.
Implement new ways of working to ensure that we are operating in an environment of best practice and develop a continuous improvement programme which drive synergies and improve efficiencies.
The role is designed to derive maximum impact and value from the individuals’ programme engineering delivery experience, coaching and inspiring others and mitigating risk to the business in engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
Defining, leading, implementing and delivering the strategy, plan and key objectives for the Engineering Team:
Responsible for Engineering Performance, conducting Engineering Performance reviews and generating the Sector Engineering Dashboard (including KPIs, such as EEIs, OTIF and DAVD, Cost of Non Quality and Performance Effectiveness Review ratings).
Representing Engineering at PMRs for projects / portfolios.
Responsible for early identification, mitigation and communication of potential issues and risks which are likely to have an adverse effect on the sector
Providing technical leadership to a portfolio of products and projects to deliver the solution to time, cost and quality.
Operational Management of a selection of Engineering Delivery Managers
Act as a technical focal point within for interactions with wider Thales and industry, building relationships, knowledge and understanding.
Attendance at key external events to promote the profile of capabilities.
Drive the development of engineers across the Sector including identification and development of critical skills, increasing professional standing, improving performance and effectiveness through coaching, mentoring and facilitating knowledge transfer (as appropriate).
Assume the accountability for the engineering resources demanded within the IBP, optimising resources allocated to projects within portfolio and through collaboration with other Sectors where appropriate.
Ensure quality of engineering design reviews within the portfolio.
Endorsement of the Engineering cost and time estimates for new bids/variations to meet business and customer objectives.
Development of strategic relationships with relevant strategic suppliers to the Sector.
Lead in the implementation of state of the art ways of working to ensure that we are operating in an environment of best practice and lead in developing of a continuous improvement programme which drive synergies and improve efficiencies.
Ensure compliance and appropriate tailoring of both local and Chorus 2 Process throughout the Sector engineering teams (including approval of all Sector Engineering Management Plans).
Work with the other Heads of Engineering Delivery to ensure through life support considerations of products are reflected in their development phase
Ensure we develop, harness and protect the data relating to performance and support of our products (e.g. FRACAS, HUMS, Big Data, etc.)
Ensure engineering support to customers is as effective and efficient as possible.

The post holder will be expected to provide guidance on financial and budgetary activities undertaken by the Sector projects.
