HEAD OF DEPARTMENT PHYSIOLOGY
Applicants are invited for the position of Head of Department of Physiology in the School of Biomedical Sciences, one of the six schools within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Department plays a vital role in the training of Health Sciences students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It has a strong legacy of research excellence and contributes significantly to the scientific development of postgraduate students within the school. Additionally, the Department also teaches in the Science Faculty, offering a full-year course for 2nd and 3rd year BSc students.

Minimum requirements and experience:
The applicant must have:
(i) a Doctorate degree in an appropriate discipline and hold the title of either Full Professor or Associate Professor or qualify to be awarded one of the academic titles. Click here for FHS Criteria.pdf
(ii) at least 10 years post-PhD academic experience, including experience in university administration at a senior level.
(iii) excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the department.
The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of Department for a fixed term of 5 years, renewable based on performance. Should the appointee be from outside the University, the appointee would be transferred to a continuous academic post at an appropriate level within the appropriate discipline, at the end of their term of office.
The awarding of the title Professor/Associate Professor will depend on the successful candidate s qualifications, research, and other academic criteria as determined by the faculty guidelines. If the candidate is appointed from outside the University, these criteria will still apply.
