Definition of Classification:

The Head Coach of Men's and Women's Tennis/Coordinator of the CJV Tennis Center is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating all aspects of the men's and women's tennis programs. The Head Coach of Men's and Women's Tennis must comply with all University, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rules and policies. The Head Coach of Men's and Women's Tennis must have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, this position is responsible for furthering the mission of the University, the Department of Athletics, and the Men's and Women's program through leadership and education.

May be required to travel for extended periods of time for athletic contests and recruiting activities. Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required by the teams' schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsible for ensuring all facets of the men's and women's tennis programs, including staff, student-athletes, and others, comply with all NCAA, SCIAC conference, and University rules and regulations at all times. Responsible for recruitment of qualified student-athletes to the University of Redlands and participation in the men's and women's tennis programs. Responsible for the men's and women's tennis coaching staff, including 1 full-time, 10-month assistant coach and 1-2 part-time assistant coaches. Responsible for the oversight of the on-court coaching duties for the men's and women's tennis programs. Responsible for the scheduling of competitions and other duties associated with the execution of the men's and women's tennis schedules. Responsible for budget administration and fundraising for the men's and women's tennis programs. This includes but is not limited to hosting camps and/or juniors' tournaments. Responsible for working in partnership with the Advancement and Alumni Relations offices to continue building relationships with alumni and friends of Bulldog Tennis. Oversee the care and maintenance of the Coach Jim Verdieck Tennis Center, including washing the courts and windscreens, general equipment maintenance, etc. Oversee, supervise, and schedule the use of the Coach Jim Verdieck Tennis Center. Responsible for maintaining ongoing relationships and communications with community entities, including Redlands Racquet Club, Redlands Unified School District, etc., which utilize the tennis facility. Teach physical education activity courses according to assigned load during the academic year. Responsibilities include a collateral departmental administrative assignment to be performed in support of the department; such assignment will be determined by the strengths, skills, and experience of the successful candidate. Supervise, plan, direct, and assign work of assigned staff; make hiring and disciplinary decisions; provide feedback on performance and approve timesheets. Function as an active team member of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Experience/Training/Education:

Required
Bachelor's degree. Three (3) years of coaching experience is required; preference will be granted to candidates with collegiate coaching experience and/or head coaching experience. A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Preferred
Master's degree.
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge and understanding of the NCAA Division III philosophy and the role of physical education and athletics within a private, liberal arts academic setting. Possess the ability to attract outstanding students to the University. Knowledge and understanding of the role of physical education, recreational sports, and athletics in a private, liberal arts academic setting. Ability to provide leadership, development, and direction for staff and student-athletes. Strong interpersonal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with athletic participants. Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing. Excellent organizational skills, and detail orientated. Ability to work productively in a collaborative environment to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. Follow appropriate safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of personal computers and personal computer software and applications. Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology. Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Understand, interpret, explain, and apply applicable federal and state policies and laws. Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, extreme temps and/or loud noises. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. May be required to travel for extended periods of time for athletic contests and recruiting activities. Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required by the teams' schedules.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents regularly stand, walk and sit; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; walk on a regular basis and stand for prolonged periods; travel to various locations; distinguish colors and have depth perception; climb stairs; reach with hands and arms; pushing, pulling and lifting; stoop or kneel or crouch; lift, carry and/or move objects typically weighing up to 10-25 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The University will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current employee who was conditionally offered the position.

DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
